Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

Hello Saturday Runners!
One more reminder: The SLR meeting time is now 1 hour later than it was over the summer, currently 8:00 am, so don't forget about the shift and accidentally show up an hour early.
Our route this Saturday, one week out from Marine Corps, is the 10 mile Chain Bridge Loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you're building up to a race later on in the fall and you aren't tapering yet, you can lengthen this route by instead running the Marymount Chain Bridge variant for 14 miles, or if you'd like 16 miles you can run that route and then keep going down on the DC side and cross the 14th St Bridge to return. It's finally starting to feel like fall and will probably get down to about 40 deg on Saturday morning, so grab your gloves on the way out and enjoy a cool and sunny long run!
Thank you Eiko Sato for our post-run drinks this week! Please note that with the weather changing to cooler fall temps, and distances tapering off for upcoming marathons, we will not have volunteer staffed mid-run drinks for the rest of the year, until next summer. If you'd like to make sure you have fluids during your long run, make sure to carry your own - it's never a good idea to count on any given known water fountain being functional. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up to date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
DON'T FORGET: Starting this Saturday, on October 12, the SLR meeting time will be shifting 1 hour later to 8:00 am, so move back your alarms and enjoy the extra hour of sleep at the start of your weekend.
This week's route on Saturday, October 12, will be the 14 mile loop MBT Catholic (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you aren't in Vienna or Chicago this weekend for either of their super-fast marathons, SLR will be the place to be! We have a beautiful running day forecast with temps in the low 50s, and partly cloudy skies. For those of you targeting MCM this is the start of your taper, and for those of you racing as early as this weekend, good luck! If you'd like to extend this week's route beyond 14 miles, a good place to do this is after running down onto the Rock Creek Park trail at about 11 miles where you can tack on any amount of distance by heading north first before heading back south to finish the loop. For shortening this week's route less than 14 miles, the easiest way to do so is to run out & back along the Mall, and up to Union Station and the MBT depending on how far you'd like to go.
Thank you Kyle Edgerton for post-run drinks, this week and over the past month! Please note that with the weather changing to cooler fall temps, and distances tapering off for upcoming marathons, we will not have volunteer staffed mid-run drinks for the rest of the year. If you'd like to make sure you have fluids during your long run, please make sure to carry your own - it's never a good idea to count on any given known water fountain being functional. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Happy running,
Mike
Saturday Long Runners,
Another quick update - I meant to include this in the regularly scheduled message I sent out earlier today, but forgot. The SLR meeting time is not changing this week, and will still be 7:00 am one more time on 10/5. I also apparently forgot that it's no longer September. Starting next week on 10/12, we will be shifting forward by one hour to 8:00 am as the hot weather season hopefully moves past us and we're into MCM taper mode (relatively) shorter runs.
