Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Nov 9 - Glover to Rock Creek via Tilden

Hello Saturday Runners!!

This Saturday we will be running the Glover to Rock Creek via Tilden Route, listed at 14 miles - and easily modified for a 12.5 mile run. Rumor has it that there may be construction going on at some points within Glover Archbold park so please keep an eye out and be careful. I'll be out of town at a race but will have a sub starting things off.

Thank you to Lindsay Paola for our post-run drinks! We NEED drink volunteers! You know the drill, and winter is easy since its less supplies and no ice! Its a great way to volunteer and you get to run too. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

As mentioned the route is actually 14 miles in the cue sheet (which has you coming back via Memorial Bridge), but if you cut through Georgetown and come back over the Key Bridge this cuts off about 1.5 miles giving you a 12.5 mile run.

New SLR routes have been posted though December on the SLR webpage. We will be dialing the mileage back a bit as many members recover from their Fall marathons.  Lots of other fun wintry stuff coming up like holiday happy hours and the annual snowball series races!

Hope you are enjoying this fantastic running weather!

SLR Nov 2 - RFK Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Nov 2nd, we will be running the RFK Loop route, listed at 12.5 miles. Check the cue sheet for clarification. I won't be there but will have a sub starting things off.  Great job to everyone who ran in Marine Corps Marathon last Sunday!  The season isn't over yet, as we still have club members running New York City, Philly, Richmond, and JFK (among other races).

We need post-run drink volunteers, simple as that.  We are currently set to be drinkless this Saturday unless someone steps up.  We are all extremely grateful to our regular volunteers and are now asking anyone who runs with the club and hasn't volunteered before (or in ages) to pay their dues and help out.  Please remember the club is member supported.  It really isn't a lot of work and you can still run with the group that day.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

A word of advice on the route: rather than running around the road portion behind RFK (next to fast moving cars), you should be able to run directly behind the stadium. If you want a little less miles just turn around early - turning around in Lincoln Park (before you have reached RFK) will get you about a 9.5 Mile Run.

If you need more miles you can connect with the Mt. Vernon trail north and loop around Roosevelt Island, then come back through Rosslyn. This would add about 2 miles. Each loops is 1.25 miles so you can do more loops as desired.

Hope everyone had a good Halloween!

SLR Oct 26 - MaryMount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Oct 26th, we will be running the MaryMount Chain Bridge route.  Its about 12 miles if you come back early via the Key Bridge, or a little over 14 miles if you come back the standard route through Georgetown and over Memorial Bridge.

This Sunday is the Marine Corps Marathon!!  Good Luck to everyone running! If you aren't running please come out to support your fellow runners.  There are numerous ways to get involved, check the club webpage for plenty of info.

We need post-run drink volunteers at SLR.  We currently do not have anyone signed up for post-run drinks this Saturday or any weekends coming up.  Please think about helping out, especially if you have not volunteered before.  We ask people to take a whole month for ease of logistics, but if you can't its easy enough to find a friend or fellow runner to share the duties with.  Please email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Saturday immediately following SLR will also be the final installment of the trail running workshop. So for anyone training for an ultra or just interested in an extra long run, circle back up at the SLR meeting spot around 10:30am for another 9-11 miles on trails.

Its starting to get chilly out there so dress warm - but not too warm! Looks like great racing weather for Sunday!

Happy Running!!

-- Erik
