Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR February 25 - Southeast DC

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday our rote on February 25 will be the 13.5 mile loop to Southeast DC (additional map here). If you'd rather go for a shorter distance while covering the same route, this run will pass a few Metro stations on your way back, at Potomac Ave (~8 mi), Eastern Market (~8.75 mi), and Smithsonian (~11 mi) where you can hop a train back to Rosslyn if you'd like.

Both Kathy and I will be out of town this week, but coaches Angeline and Big Guy will get things started for you on Saturday morning.

Next weekend on March 5, we will have our Annual Banquet & Membership Meeting at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights. In addition to drinks & dinner, we will be presenting our annual awards, electing the club's 2017 board of directors, and hearing a state of the club presentation. We also have an exciting keynote speaker in Matt Centrowitz, American University head cross country coach, 2-time Olympian, former 5000m American record holder, and father of Matthew Centrowitz Jr. who is the 2016 Olympic gold medalist at 1500m. Pre-registration on the club website is required for this event.

Thank you Kate Frese for post-run drinks this week! We will need someone to cover Saturday March 11, so if you're not running Rock n Roll DC and would be willing to help, please let me know. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, and because it's a relatively easy job. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR February 18 - C&O Canal Towpath

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday, February 18, we will be running out and back on the C&O Canal Towpath (additional map here). The scheduled distance if you are preparing for the Rock n Roll DC marathon is 20 miles, but you can easily modify this route to be whatever distance suits your training needs. After you get on the Towpath at the Key Bridge, your distance from the start will closely align with the trail's mile post markers. So, for a 20 mile run, turn around at about the 10 mile post on the trail, or turn around at the 8 mile post for a 16 mile run, etc.

This is your last reminder in SLR weekly emails to register for the DC RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler, which will be happening on Sunday February 26! Please make sure you are a current club member before registering for this race, as we will be running in the team competition and the club will pay your race registration entry fee. We will also organize a bus for free transportation with your friends, with pickup/drop-off points at Courthouse in Arlington, and Dupont Circle in DC. It's a really fun event, with a challenging (hilly!) race course, and as usual post-race refreshments (bagels and beer) on the bus!

Coming up on March 5, we will have our Annual Banquet & Membership Meeting at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights. In addition to drinks & dinner, we will be presenting our annual awards, electing the club's 2017 board of directors, and hearing a state of the club presentation. Thanks again to Franco Ordonez for post-run drinks! SLR February 11 - MBT-Catholic

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route, on Saturday February 11, will be MBT-Catholic (map here) for 14 miles. For a run less than 14 miles, the easiest modification is to go out & back on the Mall and the Metropolitan Branch Trail, or for more than 14 miles you can add distance on any of the major trails since we will pass Rock Creek Park, C&O Towpath, Capital Crescent, Mt. Vernon Trail, and the Custis Trail.

The DC RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler is coming up on Sunday February 26. This is your chance each year to travel with the club and participate in a team race with cross-country style scoring! Please make sure you are a current club member before registering for this race, as we will be running in the team competition and the club will pay your race registration entry fee. We will also organize a bus for free transportation with your friends, with pickup/drop-off points at Courthouse in Arlington, and Dupont Circle in DC.
