Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR March 18 - Arlington Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday, March 18, our route will be an old favorite, the 16 mile loop of Arlington Triangle (additional map here). To extend this route beyond the planned distance, the easiest way would be to go further on the W&OD trail, past the Custis trail intersection before heading back on the return leg. Since this is a loop route, there isn't an easy way to shorten it to be less than 16 miles other than running out & back along the first section. Turning around at the Four Mile Run Trail intersection (5 miles out) just past the airport would give you a 10 mile run.

I'll be out of town this weekend, but Raj is going to be there to kick off the run for everyone on Saturday morning.

Thank you Clara Lau for post-run drinks this week! We will need a volunteer to fill a one week gap for next week March 25, so please let me know right away if you can help. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, and because it's a relatively easy job. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR March 11 - Custis to W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route, on Saturday March 11, will be out & back on the Custis and W&OD Trails (additional map here). If you're training for Boston, this is a good time (5 weeks out) to do a 20 mile run, on a route that includes some ups and downs. Since this is an out & back route, it's easy to go as long or as short as you like. For a 20 mile run, the turn-around point will be near mile marker 9 on the W&OD trail, which is just past the Beltway. For half the distance and a 10 mile run, you can turn around at the gazebo intersection between Custis and W&OD. We have a colder turn of weather headed our way this weekend, but clear skies expected on Saturday, so re-open your winter gear drawer again and I'll see you out there!

Good luck to those of you who will be racing the Rock n Roll DC marathon or half this weekend! If you're not racing, please consider as an alternative to this week's SLR, helping out on Saturday morning at the club's water stop, to cheer on your friends and training partners who will be in the race! We will support water station 2 from 5:30 am - 10:30 am. The station is at southbound Potomac River Freeway at Fwy 66 West Off Ramp Mile marker 2.9. That is close to the Kennedy Center and Watergate Building. If you don't want to miss out on music, good karma, costumed runners, and camaraderie, please register to volunteer here, and use DCRR as your password.  The marathon starts at 7:00 am, so we need a core group of volunteers to get ready for that. The larger Half Marathon event starts at 8:30, so if you cannot make 5:30 (if you depend on Metro), please register and help out, and try to come in by 7:00 am to get ready for the big wave of half marathon runners!  Please email Bas if you have any questions.

Thank you Rachel Stone for stepping up to cover post-run drinks this week! We will need a volunteer to fill a one week gap on March 25, so please let me know if you can help on that date.

SLR March 4 - Chain Bridge Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route on Saturday March 4 will be the 10 mile Chain Bridge Loop (additional map here). To lengthen this route, you can return via Memorial Bridge rather than the Key Bridge for 12 miles, or for 14 miles follow the standard directions for our Marymount Chain Bridge route that many of you have run a number of times. If you're training for the Rock n Roll DC marathon, this is your last long run of the taper before race day!

I will be out of town again this week, but Coach Kathy will get things started for you on Saturday morning.

Thank you Kate Frese for post-run drinks this week! We will need someone to cover next week Saturday March 11, so if you're not running Rock n Roll DC and would be willing to help, please let me know.

Mike
