Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR June 24 - RFK

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week, on June 24, will be 12 miles to RFK (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). This is an out & back route, so you can shorten it to any other distance you like by turning around earlier. For a longer run, you can extend this route to 16 miles by taking a left at 15th St on your way back, and going down around the tip of Hains Point before heading back along the river up to Memorial Bridge. Some rain is in the forecast for the early hours of tomorrow morning, but hopefully it will have passed by 7:00 am. Either way, be ready for a very humid run with the dew point above 70 deg F, and be sure to stay hydrated!

Mid-run drinks this week will be near the center of Lincoln Park on E Capitol St, thanks to Erin and John Velasco! Going out and back to RFK, you'll pass them twice at about 5.25 and 7 miles. Thanks also to Elizabeth Kelley for post-run drinks over the last few weeks! There are lots of openings in our volunteer schedule after next week for mid-run drinks, so please take a look and let me know when you can help out.

Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, while mid-run drinks can be booked on a week by week basis. SLR drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR June 17 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, on June 17, our route will be out & back along the Rock Creek Park Trail (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). This week is the kick-off of the Marathon Training Program which will be meeting concurrently with us over the summer, and so the recommended distance for those who are beginning that training program is 10 miles. You can easily adjust the distance on this route though, but simply turning around whenever you reach your own halfway point. While we typically do run rain or shine, there are thunderstorms in the forecast for Saturday, and in the event of active thunder and lightning the group run will be cancelled. If no cancellation notice is posted on the club's facebook, twitter, or SLR page, then the run is expected to go on as planned, as long as the conditions remain safe.

I'm not going to be at SLR this week, but Brian Danza will be there in my place to help kick off the run, along with the MTP coaches.

Thank you Elizabeth Kelley providing post-run drinks this week! Please note that there will not be mid-run drinks this weekend, due to lack of a volunteer. I've been getting a great response lately on post-run volunteers, but we'll need a lot more people to step up for mid-run drinks this summer!

SLR June 10 - Potomac Overlook Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

One more reminder: Since last week, we are now meeting one hour earlier at 7:00 am for the summer!

This week's route on June 10 will be 12 miles, out to some trail running at Potomac Overlook Loops (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). The as-written route is 12 miles with 4 loops of the park, but you can add or subtract distance by doing a different number of loops. Each loop is 1.2 miles, so just running out and back to the park will be about 7 miles. Temperatures will be warming up over this weekend, but it should still be comfortable running in the 60s on Saturday morning!

Mid-run drinks this week will be at the Potomac Overlook Park gazebo near the tennis courts, provided by Rich Mendelowitz, with Elizabeth Kelley covering post-run drinks. Please thank our volunteers for helping to keep you hydrated! There are still lots of opportunities to volunteer for mid-run drinks this summer, as well as post-run drinks later in the season, so please take a look at how you can help out.
