Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR September 16 - Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday's route, on September 16th, will be Ross Drive (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). This route is typically about 14.5 miles, but since Beach Drive is closed, I'm going to recommend a slight modification that will make it probably closer to 15 miles. Rather than looping Beach Drive and Ross Drive, my recommendation is to simply make this an out & back route, going to the left up Ridge Rd and then Ross Dr, turning around when you get to the end of Ross Dr. If you'd like to shorten the route to any other distance, you can simply turn around sooner, or to add distance you can keep going on Beach Drive north of Ross Drive, where it will be re-opened. It's going to be a little bit warmer than last weekend, but still good running weather, with temperatures in the 60s and low 70s as you get towards the end of your long run, so do expect things to warm up.

Thanks to our MTP coordinator Jonny Pellish for post-run drinks this week, and Ben Malakoff for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located at Pierce Mill along the Rock Creek trail, which you'll pass at roughly 5 and 10 miles on this run, on your way out and then again on your way back. The day will be heating up, and humidity will be high, so do carry your own fluids too if you need to!

Please note: we're still meeting at our summer time of 7:00 am! I'm expecting that we'll switch back to 8:00 am in a few weeks, on the first Saturday of October. I'll be giving you all advance reminders over the next few weeks, and will highlight the change the week before it happens in a few places, at the start of SLR, in these emails, and on Facebook & Twitter.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR September 9 - C&O Canal Towpath

Hello Saturday Runners!

While we're all sending hurricane thoughts to the south and west this week, we're going to have some fantastic long run weather here tomorrow! It's going to be a clear sunny day with mid-day high temps in the lower 70s, and mid to upper 50's for us in the morning. This week's route will be out & back on the C&O Canal Towpath (downloads: cue sheet and gpx), for a scheduled distance of 20 miles if you're targeting MCM, or anything more or less. Once you get onto the Towpath, the trail's mile posts line up pretty closely with distance from the start, so for a 20 mile run you'll turn around at mile marker 10, or for 16 miles turn around at mile marker 8, etc.

Thank you Caroline Nicholson for post-run drinks, and Gabrielle Batkin for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located along the Towpath at Lock 7, which you'll pass at about 7.25 and 12.75 miles if you're going out & back for 20. There's also a water fountain (and bathrooms) at Fletchers, which is just over 3 miles from the start, and can give you a total of 4 water stops on this route.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR September 2 - Mock MCM

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run on September 2 will be a great preview of the Marine Corps Marathon course, with the Mock MCM route (downloads: cue sheet and gpx) covering 16 miles which are a close approximation of the race's middle section. If you'd like to make this run even closer to the race route, you can extend it to 18 or 20 miles by adding on either one or two out & back sections. On the first of these (for 18 miles) you get to check out the race's biggest hill on Lee Hwy, and on the second (for 20 miles, if you do both) you'll add the course's Rock Creek Park section. This alternate map shows the course with both of these additions included. If you'd like a shorter run, you can skip the Independence Ave and Mall sections for 10.5 miles, or add on any portion of those for something in between.

Thank you Caroline Nicholson for post-run drinks, and Gary Morgans for mid-run drinks! You'll pass this week's mid-run drinks twice, at about 7.5 and 12.5 miles into the run, located near the eastern tip of the Tidal Basin and the intersection between Ohio Drive and Maine Ave.

One final reminder... if your last club membership renewal was before March 1, it will expire TODAY!! Please take a moment right now to check your membership status and support DC Road Runners Club by renewing your membership through August 31, 2018, for only $25 (individual), $35 (family), or $20 (student).

Happy running!

Mike
