Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR April 28 - Glover / Soapstone / Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run will be the 14 mile loop Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). Construction is underway at the south end of the Glover-Archbold trail, so to get on the trail you should follow a minor detour. After coming up onto Canal Rd after the tunnel, continue past the regular trail entrance, and up Foxhall Rd to the right. Turn right on 44th St NW and then right on P St NW, which will end at an entrance to the trail. From that point on, you can follow the route as mapped. I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Dan Lesmez will be there to kick things on on what should be a perfect spring morning with the sun out and temperature in the low 50s!

Thank you Franco Ordonez for post-run drinks! We will need more volunteers for the end of May and beyond, as well as mid-run drinks coming up in June, so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR April 21 - Four Mile Run Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

Congrats to any of you who made it through the brual conditions in Boston last week! Hopefully you're resting and not joining us this Saturday. For everyone else, we'll be running 11.5 miles on the Four Mile Run Park route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to shorten the route, you can make it about 8 miles by hopping over to Crystal City at the airport, and then taking 18th St from Crystal Dr. to Eads St. before rejoining the mapped route. We should have a nice clear and cool morning in store this Saturday, perfect for running, so come on out to join us!

Thank you James Sledge for stepping in at the last minute to cover drinks this week!

Mike

SLR April 14 - Olympic Torch

Hello Saturday Runners!

Good luck to our Boston runners this week who won't be at SLR! Tomorrow morning's run on Saturday, April 14 will be 12.5 miles along the Olympic Torch route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). Since this one is a loop there's no easy way to cut distance while staying along the route, but you could go up 23rd St from the Lincoln Memorial, all the way up to a left on Mass Ave, and then back down the Glover Archbold Trail, which I would guess is between 9 and 10 miles. It's going to be a beautiful Saturday in DC, so I'll see you all there!

Thank you Ted Logothetti for post-run drinks the past two weeks! We now need more volunteers for next week and beyond, so please get in touch with me now if you can help. SLR post-run drinks will not resume after tomorrow until more folks sign up! The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike
