Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR June 9 - MacArthur Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

Don't forget that since last week we have started meeting at 7:00 am for the summer!

On Saturday, June 9, our route will be the 13 mile MacArthur Loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd rather go for a shorter run, I'd recommend simply running out & back on the Capital Crescent Trail where we'll be starting out. It's going to be warm and humid tomorrow morning, but hopefully the rain will hold out until later in the day... Get ready to run up some hills on this one!

Thanks this week go to Shawna for post-run drinks and Liz for mid-run drinks, which will be located on 49th St NW, roughly 7.5 miles into the route. We are in need of more volunteers in July and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks starting next week, so please let me know right away if you can help with this. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR June 2 - TIME CHANGE 7:00 AM - Klingle Rd to Newark

Hello Saturday Runners!

Don't forget that beginning this week, our meeting time will be 7:00 am for the summer!

This Saturday we will be running 14.5 miles on the Klingle to Newark route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), which will give you a chance to run the recently reopened Klingle Valley Trail in the uphill direction. If you'd like to shorten the run, you can reduce the distance to 12 miles by cutting off the loop between Klingle and Newark, simply running out & back on Rock Creek.

Please thank Ian for post-run drinks this week, and Mary for mid-run drinks, which will be located at the corner of Woodley Rd and 33rd Place NW. We are in need of more volunteers in June for both post-run drinks (next week) and mid-run drinks (two weeks out), so please get in touch with me if you can help, so please let me know right away if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR May 26 - GWK Shady

Hello Saturday Runners!

Reminder: Beginning next week, on June 2, our meeting time will be moving up to 7:00 am for the summer months to beat the heat

This week's run on May 26 is the 10.5 mile trial loop GWK Shady (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). As has been the case recently, the Glover-Archbold trail south end is closed for construction, so continue past the normal entrance up Foxhall Rd NW, take a right on 44th St NW, and then a right on P St NW which will end at an entry trail into Glover-Archbold. After you take a left on the Wesley Heights connector trail, follow the yellow blazes until you wind up in Battery Kemble park. I'm going to be out of town again this week, but Kerry O'Brien will be there to kick off the run for you!

We will need more volunteers in June for both post-run drinks (two weeks out) and mid-run drinks (next week), so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike
