Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Apr 6 - Upton Hill Route

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, April 6th, we will be running the Upton Hill route, listed at 12 miles - check the route map for details.

Please thank Jeff Austin for our post-run drinks! As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

If you want less than 12 you can always turn around early (its basically an out and back).  At 4.75 miles in (and again at 7.5 miles) there are restooms/water next to Westover Park in case you need a pit-stop.  If you want more miles you can do the bridge-to-bridge route (Key Bridge, Georgetown, Rock Creek park trail, come back via Memorial bridge) for about 4 extra miles.  That or go do a loop around Roosevelt Island to tack on about 2 more.

Don't let the name fool you, you are only running uphill 1/2 the time!

SLR Mar 30 - Glover to Rock Creek via Tilden

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, March 30th, we will be running the Glover to Rock Creek Park Loop (via Tilden), listed at 14 miles and featuring a few miles of easy trail running. Check the cue sheet for clarification.  Cherry Blossom 10 Miler is 1 week out.  Boston Marathon is in 2 weeks.  The GW Parkway 10 miler is in 3 weeks, featuring a water stop at Belle Haven manned by none other than the DC Road Runners Club (volunteers needed!).

Please thank Eric Waskowicz for excellent post-run beverage work throughout the month of March. As always we seek volunteers for post-run beverages in the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Remember, summer is just around the corner and we will be needing both monthly post-run drink volunteers as well as mid-run drink stop volunteers for each week. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

If you need more miles you can connect with the Mt. Vernon trail north and loop around Roosevelt Island, then come back through Rosslyn. This would add about 2 miles. Each loop is 1.25 miles so you can do more loops as desired. To shorten the route by 1 mile, you can come back through Georgetown and across the Key Bridge.

Have a great run! Is it Spring yet??

SLR Mar 23 - Rock Creek Park out & back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, March 23rd, we will be running the Rock Creek Park out and back route. The listed route mileage is 20 miles, but since its an out and back you can do as you please. This is nice since it allows for people to go long or short.  If you are running Boston this year you are 3 weeks out! Speaking of, if you are running make sure to sign up for the DCRRC Boston Marathon team whether you are seeking competition or comradery.

Please thank Eric Waskowicz for excellent post-run beverage work throughout the month of March. As always we seek volunteers for post-run beverages in the coming months.  Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Directions: Starting at Iwo Jima Memorial, take Memorial Bridge, and then go left to travel North on the Rock Creek Park Trail, past the Watergate and past Georgetown, and then just keep on truckin'! At 4.2 miles out, stay on main trail and go around the tunnel (not through it). At 6.5 miles out pass Pierce Mill (bathroom stop with water here), trail passes a parking lot, crosses a road and empties out onto Beach Rd, which is closed to cars on weekends.

Approx. Mileage Options (turn around spots):

10: At 5 miles out, trail passes Zoo entrances, water/bathrooms ~50ft inside.

13: At 6.5 miles out is Pierce Mill, water/bathrooms here too.

16.6: At 8.3 miles out is Park Ranger Station. Might be water across the street.

20: At 10 miles out is Sherrill Drive NW (on right), turn around for a 20 mile long run! Keep going for even more!

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it once again but have a sub starting things off.  Hope to see everyone next week - oh, and Spring is here! Get ready to put those tights away for summer!
