Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
Our route on Saturday, June 13, will be Battery Kemble Loops for about 16 miles (additional map here). You can shorten the route to 14 miles by running everything as written on the cue sheet, except skipping the two loops of Battery Kemble park. To shorten the route further, simply turn around and retrace your steps when you've reached half your desired distance. Extra mileage beyond 16 can be added either with additional loops of Battery Kemble park, or extra out-and-back distance on the Captial Crescent Trail.
I won't be in town to start the run on Saturday morning this week, but Kerry O'Brien will covering for me.
Many thanks to Angela Katson for providing our post-run beverages for the last few weeks! Be sure to thank Paul Westcott as well when you see him at the mid-run drink station at the base of Battery Kemble park on MacArthur Blvd. We are now in need of a mid-run drink volunteer for next week, June 20! Both mid-run and post-run beverages are entirely volunteer supported, so no volunteers means no liquids for your run. Up to date volunteer needs are posted on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
If you missed last week's run, remember that we are now meeting at 7:00 am for the summer to beat the heat! This will continue to be our start time through the fall, so make sure to set your alarms one hour ealier.
This week's route will be Potomac Overlook Loops for 13 miles (additional map here). The route is lollipop-style, with 4 laps around a trail of about 1.25 miles, reached via an out and back. You can easily adjust your total distance by running either fewer laps or more laps. If you run only to the start of the trail and turn around with no loops, the distance would be about 7 miles.
Thank you Angela Katson for post-run beverages, and thanks also to Rich Mendelowitz for providing our first mid-run beverages of the summer! To continue mid-run drinks through the warm weather, please take a look at the schedule and think about what weekends you will be available to help. Up to date volunteer needs are posted on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses. If everyone pitches in, we'll have no trouble keeping our water stops stocked all summer long!
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
TIME CHANGE: This week, Saturday May 30th, is the first week we will be meeting at 7:00 am for the summer to beat the heat! This will continue to be our start time through the fall, so make sure to set your alarms one hour ealier.
This week's route will be Cathedral-Clintons for 13 miles (additional map here). If you'd like to add any distance, you can do an out and back on the Mall when you reach the Lincoln Memorial on your way back, which will get you up to 18 miles total if you go all the way to the Capitol. For a shorter run, I'd suggest doing an out and back on the Rock Creek trail.
I'm still going to be out of town this weekend, but Brian Danza will start the run for you on Saturday morning.
Thank you Angela Katson for post-run beverages! I've posted our routes for this summer, through the Marine Corps Marathon, so please take a look at the schedule and think about what weekends you will be available to help with either post-run or mid-run drinks. We are in need of volunteers for mid-run drinks in June and onward, and you can always find current volunteer needs on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses. If everyone can pick up only one week for mid-run drinks, we'll have no trouble keeping our water stops stocked all summer long!
Happy running!
Mike
