Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Sept 24 - Custis and W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run is our Custis and W&OD run.  It's an out and back, and some will run all the way to the beltway and back for 20 miles.  Paul Westcott has graciously offered to provide our beverages, and he will be waiting in East Falls Church Park near mile 6, so you can refill those bottles a couple of times.  Be sure to thank Paul!

Also please thank Rich Mendelowitz for providing our post run beverages through the entire month of September.  His duties are coming to a close-- if you can pick up the bins after Saturday's run and bring us a fresh supply on October 1, please let me know ASAP.

We are in need of Post-Run beverage volunteers for all upcoming months.  For ease of logistics, it's preferable if someone (or a team of people) can do a whole month.  However, if you can't do a whole month, but can pick up at the end of SLR one week and bring new supplies the next week, please let me know that.  We can use your help!!

Also, this will be my last week as SLR leader.  Chris Miller has graciously volunteered to step in for the month of October, but we are looking for a leader who can take over at any time.  Please send me an email if you are interested.  I'm happy to answer any questions, or simply forward your name to the board.  Thank you to everyone for making it easy to lead the group, by volunteering to bring beverages, providing route suggestions, helping newcomers, reminding me to announce things, and filling in for anything else we've ever needed.

Lastly, remember that the club has a huge volunteer commitment to fulfill for the

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon on Sunday, October 2.

I'd be remiss if I didn't include a plug for the best volunteers in the club-- our SLR regulars-- to please help out.  I'm sure there's some volunteer credit involved, and it's also located near my personal favorite portion of the Mt. Vernon Trail-- perhaps you'd like to get a group together to carpool to the race and have a nice run on the beautiful Mt. Vernon afterward!

Thanks everyone, and see you Saturday!

Kristin

SLR Sept 17 - Out/Back Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run is a simple course in which you can choose your distance-- just a nice Out and Back on Rock Creek Park path.

All there is to it is starting off to Memorial Bridge, staying on the water past the Kennedy Center, and continuing up the path until you want to turn around.  Temps should be nice and forgiving.

Please thank Kate Malone for providing our beverages near Pierce Mill, and Rich Mendelowitz for having our post run beverages back at Iwo Jima for us.  (And remember to put your recyclables in the yellow bins when you are through!)

Thanks, everyone, and see you tomorrow!

Kristin
