Larry Noel 12K Race and 3K Fun Run

The Larry Noel Greenbelt Races moved to a new weekend, new times, and new courses this year.  One of the reasons for moving to the morning was to reduce the threat to the race by late-afternoon lightning; ironically, the sky lit up with a lightning storm just hours before the race.  But the rain cleansed the air, presenting runners with a cool but humid morning on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

Jeff Gaudette from Baltimore won the men's 12K race by a wide margin in 40:44.  He was followed by David Roche of Millington in 43:23 and Mark Handelman of Bethesda in 43:54.  Malcolm Lester of the District was the first male Masters finisher with a time of 44:53.  Elena Orhova of Gaithersburg won the women's 12K in 45:33, followed by Ashley Griffith of Mclean in 50:59 and Ann Abbott of Annandale in 55:41.  Win Persina of the District was the first women's Masters finisher with a time of 58:22.

This year’s 3K Fun Run was co-located with the 12K Race and went up and down the Research Road hill, which features a 36-meter (118 foot) elevation change over a short distance.  Ted Poulos of Mclean finished first in 12:33, but 9-year-old Page Lester of the District was nipping at his heals and finished just 3.6 seconds after Ted.  Page, along with Mario Martemucci, Evan Candey, Sydney Whitt, and Amelia Lawlor won our Young Runner awards.

First, second, third and first-Masters finishers in the 12K race received gift certificates to Georgetown Running Company, with locations in Georgetown and Chevy Chase.  GRC also contributed generous discount certificates to age-group winners in both 12K and 3K races.

For the second year, the Larry Noel Races benefited the Girls Gotta Run Foundation, a D.C.-based volunteer organization founded in 2006 to support impoverished Ethiopian girls who are training to be runners. Training to be athletes allows them to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and gain personal independence.  Besides athletic shoes, GGRF provides money for training clothes, extra food, coach subsidies, and other training-related expenses.  By providing support for these aspiring athletes, Girls Gotta Run gives Ethiopian girls the chance to improve not only their lives, but also their families and communities.

Race Directors Ben Richter and Sharone Cheskis, and Girls Gotta Run Foundation Executive Director Patricia Ortman, thank the many volunteers who made this year’s races possible: Dylan Bartlett, Peter Blank, Jennifer & Mariam Bolan, the Bowie family (Susan, Samantha, Sydney & Robert), Joe Broderick, Pat Brown, Nancy Bullock, Brian Danza, Elizabeth Eby, Jake Jurgens, Bob Platt, Jim Scott, Arnie Tretton, and Robert Trost.   We also thank Kevin Craven and his volunteers from the Laurel Amateur Radio Club for providing emergency communications support; Fr. Walter Tappe and Fr. Scott Hurd of St. Hugh of Grenoble Church in Greenbelt for supporting the race in their community (and for letting us use their tables).
