Track Championships Ahead -- and Other Events

Club Members and Guests:

[PLEASE READ DOWN for news on future events and volunteer needs!]

Another great week of running by DCRRC members is under our belts. Congratulations to Max Lockwood and Elizabeth Jones for their victories in the Belle Haven 8K, and special kudos also to runners-up Joe Racine (clearly recovering from a nasty back injury) and Robin Martz (also clearly recovered from pregnancy and childbirth!)

A special thanks to RD Scott Boggess, one of our long-time reliable race directors, for putting on another fine event and dealing with the planning for expected heat emergency conditions that, thankfully, did not come to pass. Also, while thanks go to all the volunteers, I am especially appreciative to Joe Lydon for being the first Club member to drive the van to a Club event from its new, central, and permanent location at Pentagon Row. This new home for Club equipment will make race planning and execution much easier in the future. Thanks also to Pat Brown, who for the past several years housed the van near his home and drove it to countless events.

We also had a busy week with a fine track workout under tough conditions last Wednesday, a very competitive Tidal Basin 3K (also in Wednesday's oppressive heat), and good long runs and Marathon and 10-Mile training runs on Saturday morning.

Track Championship Events -- Wed. July 26

Our next Club race is this Wednesday, July 26th, at Washington-Lee HS, the annual 1-Mile/3000 Meter Track Championships. Races start at 6:45. The final schedule and seeding of races will depend on turn-out and sign up, so please arrive ahead of time so that we can account for you and get you in the proper heat. Following is a tentative schedule.

6:45: Open Mile for runners who will exceed 8 Minutes (M&F, all ages). Please be honest about this! If you are likely to run around 8 minutes or more, please enter this heat so that there is room for other runners in the remaining heats. This will coincide with a 1-Mile RACEWALK for those interested.

7:00: Women's Masters Mile

7:10: Women's Open Mile

7:20 Men's Masters Mile

7:30 Men's Open Mile

7:50: Women's 3000M

8:05 Men's 3000M

8:20 [Excess heat for 3000M if needed].

Please note that if we can run ahead of schedule, we will! Thus, be ready to run at least 5 minutes before the scheduled time of your event.

We will aim to have no more than 20 runners in each heat of the mile, and 30 in each heat of the 3K. If there is excess demand, we will divide fields.

In order to keep this event moving smoothly, volunteers are urgently needed to take care of timing, refreshments, and other needs. Please contact RD Ed Grant at dcrrcpresident@comcast.net if you can help. I will be on-site at 5:45 to set up.

We are grateful to our friends at Potomac Runners for ceding their usual workout time at Washington-Lee, and joining us in the races. Please extend them a welcome.

Bluemont 5K -- Thurs. August 3rd

Volunteers also are needed for this Bunion Derby event, which takes place on an out and back course along the Washington & Old Dominion Trail. Please contact race director Richard Rapine or Ed Grant if you can help.

Club Picnic Race -- Sun. August 13th

Please join us for the Bunion Derby 3Mile Cross Country Race and Club Picnic at the Landon School, Bethesda. RDs are Rob and Judy Wolfe -- please contact them if you can help.

Have a great week!

Ed
