SLR May 20 - Fort Scott Hill

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday's run, on May 20, will be the 11 mile Fort Scott Hill route (additional map here). This route is an out & back, so for a shorter distance you can turn around sooner, or for a longer run you can continue further down the Mt. Vernon Trail after running up and down the hill. To make this route more of a loop, you can also head back to the start by continuing on Fort Scott Dr. to a left on 23rd St, a right on Army-Navy Drive, and then a return past the Pentagon after going through the parking lot tunnel beneath I-395. Luckily we should have some relief from this heat wave by Saturday morning, and the forecast is looking like a really nice morning with temperatures in the 60s and only moderate humidity!

I'll be out of town again this weekend, so Rich Mendelowitz will be getting things started on Saturday morning. Please note that this week is the beginning of the Marathon Training Program's jump start, where trainees begin to run with the group, going somewhat shorter distances as a ramp-up to the official training program start. This will be the same as last summer, so it should all be familiar to those of you who were around last year. Please welcome the trainees to our group, and jump in with their pace groups if you happen to be aligned!

Thank you Christie Wetzel and Rodrigo Vellón for post-run drinks! Please remember that in two weeks at the beginning of June we'll be looking for volunteers to cover mid-run drinks as well as post-run drinks, to help get us through the hot summer months. Also, as a reminder, our meeting time will be shifting an hour earlier to 7:00 am, beginning the Saturday after Memorial Day, on June 3.

Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, while mid-run drinks can be booked on a week by week basis. SLR drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike
