Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome!  This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is 8:00 am. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Mike if you have any other questions that are not covered.

We are always looking for volunteers to bring post-run beverages for the group, and mid-run beverages during the summer. To help, please check out the schedule of needs below and email Mike to book your slot. More info on what you need to do as a volunteer (it's easy!) is on our FAQ page. If you regularly attend SLR and enjoy the free drinks then you should also be volunteering!

July 1 SLR Notes

The July 1 SLR should forever be known as the "Flood Run"! With lots (and lots...and lots) of rain falling during the week leading up to SLR, I got many messages from SLR-goers concerned that our planned route (along the Glover Archbold and Rock Creek trails) would be flooded (or at the very least, very muddy).
With the help of many SLR-goers, we determined that we "thought" the Rock Creek trail was passable and switched the route to the Ross Drive route. And we were right!! I didn't get to see the entire route (b/c I did the mid-point water stop with help from Rob Morton, Dara Schulman, and Amy Susskind!)...but the part I did see was pretty amazing. There sure was a lot of water in Rock Creek. And lots of sand on the trail. Pretty amazing what water can do!
All in all, it seems that everyone had good runs (or at least no one told me if they didn't!!).
Many thanks to Kristin Dahling for the post-run beverages!

I will not be at the July 8 SLR because I will be doing a triathlon. Heather Schloss and David Kapson will be leading in my absense. The route is the Fort Scott Hill Climb. Adam Stolzberg will be providing the mid-point beverages and Kristin Dahling the post-run beverages.

Have a great run :)

Welcome!

Welcome to the new SLR Blog!

It is great to be back as SLR leader. David Kapson did an amazing job as SLR leader and I encourage everyone to be sure to thank David for all that he has done (and continues to do!) for DCRRC!

The SLR Blog will serve as a place for me to post the weekly "write-ups" that we have all become accustomed to reading. They basically serve as a recap of what happened at SLR. So, be sure to pass along any funny (or not so funny, but noteworthy!) tidbits about your SLR run!

Please feel free to contact me at kerry@dcroadrunners.org if you have any questions or comments!!

Cheers,
Kerry.
