Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Nov 19 - Hains Point/ Mt. Vernon "T" route

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, November the 19th, we will be running the Mt. Vernon/ Hains Point "T" route. The listed route mileage is 14 miles; mileage options are provided after the directions. Please thank Mike Tosto for post-run beverages. We still need volunteers to do drinks for December (and beyond) so please consider helping out. Remember, if no one volunteers we don't get to have yummy Gatorade to drink.  The club reimburses your expenses.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Directions : Begin at Iwo Jima, take Mt. Vernon Trail south, crossing Memorial Bridge (mileage options begin here – see below), continue past Gravelly Point park (this is where the airplanes take-off). Turn around at Four Mile Run, just past the airport. Now heading North on Mt. Vernon trail - just after the 14th St. bridge, loop left to cross the 14th St. bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn left 180 degrees down stairwell to Ohio Dr. After going down Hains Point and back up the other side, turn left to go past Jefferson Memorial. Cross back over 14th St. bridge, take Mt. Vernon trail north and finish at Iwo Jima.  There are some port-a-potties at Gravelly Point fyi.

Approx. Mileage Options (do this then follow standard directions around Hains Point):

  • 8: Go directly across 14th St. bridge (do NOT run down to Gravelly Point) for 8 miles total.
  • 10: Turn around at Gravelly Point for 10 miles.
  • 13: Turn around about ¾ past DCA after you pass under the airport access road for 13 miles.
  • 14: Turn around at the end of DCA before you cross over the water for 14 miles.
  • ??: Or keep going on Mt. Vernon and turn around later for even more miles!

In SLR news, New routes are posted! SLR Route mileages are approximate and each runner is welcome to run more or less as needed to fit their training schedule. The routes are geared towards the GW Birthday Marathon, National Rock-n-Roll Marathon, and Boston Marathon, with long runs every 2 or 3 weeks, and the final long run 3 weeks out from each race. We will be sharing most of our routes with the DCRRC Spring Marathon and Half-Marathon training programs (who start/finish in Georgetown), so be sure to say "Hi"!

Great job to those of us to ran Richmond last weekend, and good luck to folks running Philly or JFK50 this weekend!

See you tomorrow morning - Weather is supposed to be clear and cool with starting temps around freezing, warming up to around 40 later, so dress warm! but not too warm...

SLR Nov 12 - Out and Back on C&O

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, November the 12th, we will be running the Out and Back on C&O towpath route.  The listed Mileage is 10 miles, but its easy to do more or less as needed.  Please thank Marla Regan for post-run beverages.  We still need volunteers to do drinks for December (and beyond) so please consider helping out.

Directions: From Iwo Jima, go through Rosslyn, cross key Bridge and a sharp right after the bridge down to river side of C&O Canal.  Turn right (go under Key Bridge) and run for miles!  The Towpath mile markers are roughly the distance from Iwo Jima (e.g., run to marker 5 and back for 10 miles total)  See the route cue sheet for full details and maps!

There are bathrooms at Fletcher's Boathouse at Mile Marker 3.  Unfortunetely, water fountains are probably turned off by now.

In SLR news, I am taking over as the new SLR leader for DC Road Runners.  Kristin did a great job and left some big shoes to fill!  I'm glad to take on the responsibility and look forward to running with everyone.  I will be coordinating with DCRR and the spring training programs to work out distances and routes for winter (to be posted soon).

Good luck to those of us running Richmond Marathon this weekend!

See you tomorrow morning - Weather is supposed to be clear and cool with temps around 40, so should be a great run!
