Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Dec 10 - Battery Kemble

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December the 10th, we will be running the Loops of Battery Kemble route. The listed route mileage is about 16 miles, modified for 14 in these directions (below); mileage options are provided after the directions. The directions are a bit long, so check out the full directions in the route link for clarification - You might want to check out the big map too. The route might sound tricky but really its not, and provides great views of the river, rich-person homes, and even a run through the woods complete with a babbling creek for some ambient noise!

Jessica Schwartz has been nice enough to take care of our post-run beverages. However, as of now, we do not have a beverage volunteer for the 2nd half of December (and beyond), so if no one steps up in the next week we won't have yummy post-run drinks. DCRRC reimburses your expenses so please consider volunteering. We typically try to have people do 1 month at a time. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

The 2011 Gar Williams Half Marathon (part of the DCRRC Snowball Series) will be Sunday. Its free to DCRRC members and $5 for non-members. If you aren't running they could always use volunteers too.

Directions (long): Begin at Iwo Jima, cross key bridge down to C&O Canal path but then go left and take a quick right down the steps to Water St. Right on Water St. to Capital Crescent Trail (paved trail). Continue (past Fletcher's Boat House) on Cap Crescent. Just past MM 6.5 U-Turn at water fountain, now after about 1/4 mile from U-turn, take left onto trail with chain link fence on left to Potomac Ave. Follow Potomac Ave., then left on Galena Place. Take right onto former railbed dirt trail (or take MacArthur Blvd if you miss it). Now begin loops of Battery Kemble Park: Go up Chain Bridge Rd (HILL), right onto gravel road, right onto trail at bottom of hill, stay on trail through woods and exit onto MacArthur Blvd. Take MacArthur back to base of Chain Bridge (1 loop complete) . Retrace your steps back to Cap. Crescent Trail, turn left on trail (don't go to U-turn spot). Continue back to Georgetown and across Key Bridge through Rosslyn to Iwo Jima.

There are bathrooms at Fletcher's boat house on the other side of the canal.

Approx. Mileage Options:

  • 10: Turn around at MM 6.5 at Water-fountain, making the U-turn but just coming back from there
  • 13: Don't do any loops of Battery Kemble, turn around once you get to base of Chain Bridge Rd.
  • 15.5: Follow route directions but do 2 loops of Battery Kemble (each loop is ~ 1.25 miles)

Have a great run! Looks like temps in the high 30s and mostly sunny tomorrow morning.

SLR Dec 3 - RFK Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December the 3rd, we will be running the RFK Loop route. The listed route mileage is approx. 13 miles; mileage options are provided after the directions. Please thank Jessica Schwartz for our post-run beverages.  I am not able to make it this week so we will be having a sub to get things started - Howell Posner of DCRRC has been kind enough to take my place and will be at Iwo Jima prior to the 8:00am SLR start.

Directions: From Iwo Jima, take Memorial Bridge into DC, pass by the left of the Lincoln Memorial.  Run along service road next to Constitution Ave.  After the Capital, turn right onto 1st St. then turn left on East Capital St.  Run in the bike lane to RFK.  Loop around RFK clockwise, watching for cars and take East Capital St. back to 1st St.  Turn left on 1st St.  Turn right, go past Capital towards the Mall.  Run past left side of Washington Monument, past left side of Lincoln to Memorial Bridge, Finish at Iwo Jima.

There are heated bathrooms with running water under the Lincoln Memorial and in the little house behind the Washington Monument.  This can be very handy during winter!

Approx. Mileage Options:

  • 7: Loop around the Capital and continue back for about 7 miles
  • 9: Loop around the Capital but come back via Key Bridge (through Georgetown) for about 9 miles
  • 15: Normal route, but come back via Key Bridge for about 2 extra miles, 15 total

Not to sound like a broken record, but we still need volunteers to do drinks for the 2nd half of December (and beyond).  Its not too much work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses so please consider volunteering.  We typically try to have people do 1 month at a time.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Have a great run – its starting to cool off but still great running weather, with temps in the mid 30s and plenty of sunshine!

SLR Nov 26 - Rock Creek Park out and back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, November the 26th, we will be running the Rock Creek Park out and back route. The listed route mileage is 16 miles; mileage options are provided after the directions. Please thank Mike Tosto for post-run beverages.

Directions : Go from Iwo Jima down to Memorial Bridge, cross the bridge and go North along Rock Creek Park trail, passing the Kennedy Center and Watergate on your right, and Georgetown on your left.  At 4.2 miles out, stay on the main trail and go around the tunnel, not through it.  At 5 miles out, trail passes the Zoo entrance.  Continue North along the bike path.   At 6.5 miles out, at Peirce Mill, water fountain (probably off) on trail and bathroom stop to side.   Just past Peirce Mill, trail passes a parking lot, crosses a road and empties out onto Beach Rd, which is closed to cars here on weekends.   At 8.3 miles out is the Park Ranger Station.  Turn around and head back the same way for a 16.6 mile run.  More info. and map in the cue sheet.

Approx. Mileage Options:

10: Turn around at Zoo entrance for 10 miles total.

13: Turn around at Peirce Mill for 13 miles total.

16: Turn around at Park Ranger station for 16.6 miles total.

24: You can continue on Beach Rd. all the way to the beltway, but this is over 24 miles total.

As I mentioned last week, the SLR routes are posted through the end of January and are geared towards the GW Birthday Marathon (A DCRRC race), National Rock-n-Roll Marathon, and Boston Marathon, with long runs every 2 or 3 weeks, and the final long run 3 weeks out from each race. We will be sharing most of our routes with the DCRRC Spring Marathon and Half-Marathon training programs (who start/finish in Georgetown), so be sure to say "Hi"!

We still need volunteers to do drinks for the 2nd half of December (and beyond) so please consider helping out. Remember, if no one volunteers we don't get to have yummy Gatorade to drink.  The club reimburses your expenses.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Hope everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving complete with lots of Carbs.  See you tomorrow morning – The weather should be great for running, with temps in the high 40s and plenty of sunshine!

-- Erik
