Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Nov 10 - National Capital

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Nov 10th we will be running the National Capital 12 miler route. Check the cue sheet for clarification.

We currently do not have anyone on deck for post run beverages for the month of November -  Please remember that the group is member supported, so consider volunteering, especially if you have either never volunteered or have not for a long long time.  Its really not that much work and the club reimburses your expenses - Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Mileage Options:

8: To cut it down to an 8ish mile run, come back via Memorial Bridge after we make our way back to the Lincoln Memorial

12: Run route as written

14: Before crossing the 14th street bridge, make a loop around the Tidal Basin (14 miles).  Add on even more distance by taking Mt. Vernon trail south toward DCA for a brief out-and-back, then coming back as described in the directions.

Enjoy this classic tour of Washington DC landmarks!

SLR Nov 3 - MaryMount/ Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Nov 3rd we will be running the Marymount/ Chain Bridge loop route, listed at 14 miles. Check the cue sheet for clarification.  Congrats to everyone who has completed their fall races and Marathons. Still a few more coming up including Richmond, New York City, and Philly.

In club news, there is a "Beer + Bunion Awards" Happy Hour, Thursday Nov. 8th from 6-9pm at Ireland's Four Courts Pub in Arlington (metro to Courthouse).  Check the DCRRC webpage for details on this event as well as upcoming Turkey Trots!

We currently do not have anyone on deck for post run beverages for the month of November, so please consider volunteering and keeping your fellow runners hydrated.  Its really not that much work and the club reimburses your expenses - Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Mileage Options:

  • 11: Continue on Military Road (don't run up through Zach Taylor Park), cutting off Marymount College portion, rejoin the route with a right onto Old Glebe Rd.
  • 14: Run route as written
  • 17: Continue through Georgetown, past Kennedy Center and return via Memorial Bridge ("Bridge to bridge")

Don't forget to turn those clocks back to standard time this weekend!

SLR Oct 27 - Piney Branch

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Oct 27th we will be running the Piney Branch route, listed at 13 miles.  I will not be there but Brian will be getting things started.

Good luck to everyone running Marine Corps Marathon Sunday!! Something tells me we won't be seeing you at the SLR.  If you aren't running Sunday and would like to help out there are multiple needs.  DCRRC could use volunteers at the race tent we will be sharing with Hope For Warriors, email Katie if you are interested.  Also, DCRRC is hosting a waterstop at 14th street SW between C and D streets (mile 20).  Come on out at 9:00 AM to watch the race and support the runners-including numerous club members. There is no need to RSVP-just bring yourself and friends are welcome.

Please thank Christine Westcott for our post-run drinks!  She has done a great job all month. We currently don't have anyone on deck for November (starting next week) and seek volunteers. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Although plenty of club members are doing Marine Corps there are also quite a few folks who still have their fall Marathons coming up; Philly is 3 weeks out and Richmond is in 2 weeks.  If you need longer than 13 miles, I am advising runners to continue on the C&O canal towpath after passing by Georgetown for an out and back, then eventually taking the Key Bridge back to our meeting spot.

  • to add 4.5 miles (17.5 miles total) run out to Fletchers Boathouse and back (water/facilities here)
  • to add 5.5 miles (18.5 miles total) run past Fletchers to where the Capital Crescent trail passes overhead and come back
  • or pick your own distance as needed

Happy Running and Racing this weekend!
