September 11 Memorial Tidal Basin 3K

On Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 81 runners and 11 spectators and volunteers ran and helped at D.C. Road Runners Club's September 11 Memorial 3K around the Tidal Basin, starting and ending at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC.

The memorial race was Peter Blank's idea. "We as runners wanted to show our our feelings of loss for the victims, our support for their families, and our admiration for the heroes of last September 11. We have a Tidal Basin 3K race at noon on the third Wednesday of every month, and our best way to share our feelings was to have a special race on this very special day," he said.

Jay Jacob Wind coordinated the race. Before the start, he asked the record crowd of participants to gather. He asked them to think during the race about friends and loved ones they lost and their own experiences. Then he rang a bell 184 times, as people counted out loud, quickly at first, slowly at the end, to memorialize each of the victims. "I got to about 90 before I started crying," he said. "When you look at all these runners and spectators, it's only half as many victims who died at the Pentagon that day."

After the race, participants recalled their loved ones and personal memories. Each participant received a finisher's certificate and glossy bristol American flag with "9-11 Arlington Remembers" on the back.
