1. DCRRC MEMBER OF THE WEEK

This week’s member of the week is Rolland Elliott. Rolland is a frequent participant and volunteer with the DC Road Runners Club. He’s been a member for many, many years, and he has been a race director for nearly as long as he’s been a member (he directs the Steve Thompson Belle Haven 15K in recent years.) Most recently, Rolland was contacted by the race director of the Gar Williams Half Marathon which was held last weekend because Gene, our usual race director, was to be out of the country, and he was checking to see if Rolland could step up to direct the race with his usual finesse. You know the end of the story—Rolland said YES and directed more than 200 runners and volunteers from Belle Haven and indeed, the race went on as planned. Thank you to Rolland for pulling this one off for us and congratulations on being the DCRRC Member of the Week!

4. WEDNESDAY NIGHT TRACK WORKOUTS

Here's the inside track on setting PRs: Whether you are attempting your first half-marathon, hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon, or pursuing an Olympic Trials QT for 10,000 meters, our speed sessions will help you meet your running goals. To feel the burn--and have fun doing it--join us for our Wednesday night track workouts, starting at 7:15 p.m. Personal training advice is available from the USA Track & Field-certified coach, as well as from the many other "regulars" who have experienced the highs and lows of training, injuries, and competition. Novice runners are always given a workout suitable to their level of fitness. This is the best place in town to meet other committed runners dedicated to improving their level of performance.

Our weekly track workouts are held at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington.

From Save the W&OD Trail:

TO: W&OD Trail Friends, Neighbors and all who enjoy the Trail

RE: Critical Events

Over a year ago we celebrated together when Dominion Virginia Power announced that they would NOT use the W&OD Trail as their preferred route for the new 11 story high, 240 kV electrical lines. Unfortunately, given the way that the legal rules are written, the State Corporation Commission recently stated that they must, by law, consider the W&OD trail as a route since Dominion Virginia Power owns the easement on the W&OD Trail.

What does this mean?

* It means that the only way to protect the W&OD Trail is through the legal battle that has already begun.
* It means that without a strong, dedicated legal campaign that the W&OD Trail and its 26,000 trees will be destroyed.
* It means that 110 foot high towers and high voltage lines will destroy the backyards of the over 400 homes along the W&OD Trail.
* It means that our regional park, the place where YOU bike, run, walk, ride your horses or rollerblade with your friends and families will be lost.

Save The Trail is the only registered non-profit organization that was formed to protect the W&OD Trail in this legal battle. Our attorney, Jack Rust, is engaged and fighting to win. But we need your help to do so. The deep pockets of those who wish to destroy the W&OD Trail have already engaged in multiple legal motions, increasing our costs. In addition to our legal fees, we must hire outside experts to offer testimony about the benefits of our regional park.

We must raise $50,000 before December 31st, 2005.

Without your tax deductible donation TODAY, the battle to save the W&OD Trail will be lost. This is a unique time in all of our lives. We only have today to save the Trail.

Please send your tax deductible donation to:

Save the Trail, Inc. (make the check payable to: Save the Trail, Inc.)

Hamilton, VA 20159
