Date: Sunday, March 12 at
Place:
Race Director: George Getek, ggetek@aol.com
Registration: On-site registration begins one hour before the race
start.
Entry Fee: $1 for DCRRC members; $5 for non-members; free for
contributing members.
Directions: To reach the race, take Beltway exit 54 (old exit
5), West on Braddock Rd (Rt.620) about 1.6 mi to Burke Lake Rd (Rt. 645). Left
about 4.5 mi to Ox Road (Rt. 123), L about 0.6 mi to first left past the golf
course clubhouse, follow signs to ice cream parlor.
Other information: The race is Snowball Series Race #7 and the DCRRC
Championship for 12K. At 10:15 a.m., there will be a 2K "Run for
Your Life" (shorter race accompanying the "main event") at this
race.
Specific course info: The DCRRC Burke Lake 12K (7.456 miles) in Fairfax
Station, Virginia is an out and back course. The start/finish is at the
northern end of the Burke Lake Park Ice Cream Parlor/Merry-Go-Round parking lot
on main roadway ("Start" is painted on road surface). Race proceeds
clockwise around lake over mildly rolling terrain. The first half mile is on
the paved main roadway. After crossing small bridge, bear right onto dirt path,
keeping the lake on your right. Continue on dirt path (watch for tree roots and
protruding rocks!). Proceed for another three miles to turnaround and then
proceed counterclockwise around lake back to the start/finish. The turnaround
is past the earthen dam and is approximately 200 yards pass the 4.0 mile marker
(if you reach the public marina, you've gone too far!). Race sentries are stationed
and water is available at the turnaround. The Burke Lake 12K is usually held on
the second Saturday in March. The temperature can vary from below freezing to
the mid-sixties, so dress appropriately. All runners are urged to wear
combinations of green, white and orange, since this race is close to Saint
Patrick's Day.

From Eric Zander, one of the
10K program coaches: For several weeks now members of the 10K training
program have been meeting early in the morning on the Mall for speed workouts.
I would like to open this up to anyone in the club.
Here are the details:
What: TUMS (Tuesday Morning
Speed)
When: Tuesday mornings @ 6:30
am. The workouts are ALWAYS finished by 7:30 am so we can all get off to work.
Where: On the Mall by the
Carousel in front of the Smithsonian “Castle”.
Getting there/parking: Don't
forget "Metro opens doors" and if you use metro, you should get off
at the Smithsonian Station. If driving, there is plenty of metered street
parking. Don’t forget to pump the meter even though they don’t turn on until
7am.
If you are interested in
participating, please email me at ez@ericzander.com so that I can get an idea
of how many people to expect. Also, if you would like to help me direct the
workouts, let me know as I might need one or two helpers. No coaching experience
is necessary to help out – just warm clothes.
We will try this for the
month of March and if it works well we’ll continue until the end of the 10K
training program (early May).
4.
10K TRAINING PROGRAM – WEEK THREE
The DCRRC/Arlington YMCA 10K
Training program entered the third week of their 12-week training
program. The weather has been a bit brisk, but a welcome change from the
snow and ice last year! The participants met at the Arlington YMCA for a
3 to 5 mile run along the Custis Trail. A number of the participants
have also been participating in the Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening speed
workouts. Next week, the groups will be meeting on Saturday morning at
Gravelly Point, for a long run along the Mount Vernon Trail.
We do have some walkers in
the program this year. Anyone interested in joining the program for only
walking or with any questions at all about the program, please contact Kristin
at 10Ktraining@DCRoadrunners.org
5.

easier than that.

6.
HILL WORKOUTS
Please mark your calendar
with the following hill workouts (each beginning at 9 a.m.): March 26 and

please contact Robin at rmartz@umich.edu.
7. SATURDAY
LONG RUNS
The Club holds weekly runs
from Iwo Jima on Saturday mornings, beginning at 8 a.m. with two components—a
long run for those so inclined, and a shorter run alternative of 5-6 miles for
those who don’t want to go quite so far. This week’s run is the Glover
Archibold Pandas Route of 13 miles. For Long Run reports, go to http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun.
Please send questions concerning the Saturday Long Runs to David Kapson at slrguy@dcroadrunners.org.
Please plan to join us at Whitlow’s on Wilson for breakfast after the run!
8.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT TRACK WORKOUTS
Here's the inside track on
setting PRs: Whether you are attempting your first half-marathon, hoping to
qualify for the Boston Marathon, or pursuing an Olympic Trials QT for 10,000
meters, our speed sessions will help you meet your running goals. To feel the
burn--and have fun doing it--join us for our Wednesday night track workouts,
starting at 7:15 p.m. Personal training advice is available from the USA
Track & Field-certified coach, as well as from the many other
"regulars" who have experienced the highs and lows of training,
injuries, and competition. Novice runners are always given a workout
suitable to their level of fitness. This is the best place in town to meet
other committed runners dedicated to improving their level of performance.
Our weekly track workouts are
held at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington.
Directions: From
Washington DC, take I-66 east to the
Glebe Road exit, turn right on Glebe, right on 15th Street for about 0.4 miles,
to Stafford Street, turn right and cross over I-66 and the school is on your
left. >From Vienna and points west in Virginia, take I-66 east to the
Fairfax Drive exit, follow Fairfax Drive for about 0.8 mile to Stafford Street,
turn left for about 0.3 miles and the school is on your right.
From Alexandria, take Glebe Road going north until turning right on
15th Street, and proceed as from DC.

the Virginia Square and Ballston Metro stations on the Orange Line.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Club Attire Coordinator -
DCRRC is looking for someone to sell club merchandise. This involves
maintaining a stock of the club’s attire, coordinating shipping or delivery of
attire to club members interested in purchasing it. It also involves
accepting checks and sending them to the club treasurer. Ideally, the
coordinator of the club’s attire would also attend some DCRRC events to display
clothing to club members, but this is not required. Anyone interested
should email president@dcroadrunners.org.
SLR Beverage Managers – Our
Saturday Morning Long Run group is looking for people to be responsible for
beverages for one month terms. Particularly if you are an “SLR Regular”,
please consider signing up for a month and giving a little back to the group
that gives you so much! If you are willing to be a one-month beverage
manager, please contact David at SLRguy@dcroardunners.org.
Thanks in advance for helping out.
DCRRC Board Members –If you
are interested in serving as president or a different board position, please
contact Paul at Thompsonp@ndu.edu or Kerry at raptorkerry@yahoo.com.
It’s a great time to get involved.
Awards Chairman – Pat Finn
has dutifully held this position for a decade. He says it’s time to pass
the baton. Are you interested? Please contact Susan at President@dcroadrunners.org
if you wish to keep our club supplied with awards for our events. Thank
you.

Run to register for the
National Marathon and Half Marathon at www.NationalMarathon.com. Race participants
can look forward to 13.1 or 26.2 miles of roadways and parkland through the
Nations Capitol and Prince George's County. Both events will start at RFK
Stadium and tour our country’s most famous landmarks, monuments and memorials
that include the National Mall.
With the sun rising over RFK
and the Cherry Blossoms set to bloom this will be the most beautiful half
marathon in the country!
Participate in this new event—be a part of history as DC starts a new marathon and half marathon tradition!
As a note – If a runner was registered for the 2003 DC Marathon that was cancelled at the last second (a different race than the National Marathon), they get a free entry into the National Marathon. The National Marathon staff attempted to contact those who had registered, but they weren’t able to reach everyone. If you would like to know more, please call 866-RUN- 0262 for more information
From RRCA:
