3.         10K TRAINING PROGRAM BEGAN LAST WEEKEND

The 2006 DCRRC/Arlington YMCA 10K Training program began last Saturday with 82 participants, divided by pace into 7 groups.  Participants met their coaches, sat through a brief orientation, and then set off on a short introductory run.  As a sign of the success of the program in years past, we have 5 program graduates serving as coaches this year!  The groups will meet on Saturdays for long runs, and have Tuesday morning speed workouts on the Mall at 6:30 a.m.  The goal for the 12-week program is the Arlington YMCA Mother's Day 10K on May 14th.  Contact Kristin Blanchat with any questions.

7.         WEDNESDAY NIGHT TRACK WORKOUTS

Here's the inside track on setting PRs: Whether you are attempting your first half-marathon, hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon, or pursuing an Olympic Trials QT for 10,000 meters, our speed sessions will help you meet your running goals. To feel the burn--and have fun doing it--join us for our Wednesday night track workouts, starting at 7:15 p.m.  Personal training advice is available from the USA Track & Field-certified coach, as well as from the many other "regulars" who have experienced the highs and lows of training, injuries, and competition.  Novice runners are always given a workout suitable to their level of fitness. This is the best place in town to meet other committed runners dedicated to improving their level of performance.

10.       VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Belle Haven 25K Volunteers – If you can help out on the morning of Saturday, February 25th, please contact race director John Haubert at Haubertjohn@yahoo.com.

SLR Beverage Managers – Our Saturday Morning Long Run group is looking for people to be responsible for beverages for one month terms.  Particularly if you are an “SLR Regular”, please consider signing up for a month and giving a little back to the group that gives you so much!  If you are willing to be a one-month beverage manager, please contact David at SLRguy@dcroardunners.org.  Thanks in advance for helping out.

DCRRC Board Members – It’s not too early to begin to consider whether you might be a future board member of the DC Road Runners Club.  If you are interested in serving as president or a different board position, please contact Susan at president@dcroadrunners.org or Paul at Thompsonp@ndu.edu.  It’s a great time to get involved.

Awards Chairman – Pat Finn has dutifully held this position for a decade.  He says it’s time to pass the baton.  Are you interested?  Please contact Susan at President@dcroadrunners.org if you wish to keep our club supplied with awards for our events.  Thank you.

11.       OTHER

From DC Road Runners Club:

Many, many thank yous to ALL who made last weekend’s Washington’s Birthday Marathon a big success.  First and foremost, thanks to PAT BROWN, our race director for more than a decade. Pat, we really couldn’t do it without you.  You do an amazing job year after year.  We know it’s a tough job.  THANK YOU.  Club, a standing ovation for Pat, please!  Thank you also to Bob Platt, our relay director.  Thanks to ALL who give their Saturday to help with the set-up and/or their Sunday to be out there with us.  It was a 19 degree morning and it wasn’t easy, we know.  It’s TRULY heartening to see how this club comes together on days like that.  To our registration staff, those who marked the course, those who stood on corners, passed out water, passed out chili, kept times, worked the finish line, the bag check, followed the runners around the course, laundered the relay sashes, worked with the radio club, opened the gate, yelled go, did the results and the awards, THANK YOU.  Pat Brown, the last word goes to you:  THANKS.

This year’s Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet will again be help consecutively on the afternoon and evening of the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile—Sunday, April 2—at the Clarendon Grill in Arlington.  Please mark you calendars and we’ll pass along more information very soon!

From DC Road Runners Club and Pacers:

Pacers has two stores—one in Arlington, one in Alexandria.  Both stores now offer club members a 15% discount on anything in the store.  Just show them your DCRRC membership card and you’ll receive the discount.

From the National Marathon and Half Marathon, March 25, 2006

Run to register for the National Marathon and Half Marathon at www.NationalMarathon.com.  Race participants can look forward to 13.1 or 26.2 miles of roadways and parkland through the Nations Capitol and Prince George's County. Both events will start at RFK Stadium and tour our country’s most famous landmarks, monuments and memorials that include the National Mall.

With the sun rising over RFK and the Cherry Blossoms set to bloom this will be the most beautiful half marathon in the country!

Participate in this new event—be a part of history as DC starts a new marathon and half marathon tradition!

As a note – If a runner was registered for the 2003 DC Marathon that was cancelled at the last second (a different race than the National Marathon), they get a free entry into the National Marathon.  The National Marathon staff attempted to contact those who had registered, but they weren’t able to reach everyone.  If you would like to know more, please call 866-RUN- 0262 for more information

From Aaron Cheskis, Teams Coordinator

I am looking for masters women for the coed Cherry Blossom teams.  Right now we are short runners in that demographic which makes forming coed masters teams difficult.  Cherry Blossom only has coed masters teams (no single gender master teams.) If you fit in this category and plan to run in the race, please contact me at A_cheskis@comcast.net.

From RRCA:

The RRCA will be offering another coaching certification course in Montgomery County on the weekend of June 10-11, 2006. The course will be conducted at Philbin's Athletic Training Center on Gaither Road in Gaithersburg.

Registration is open now through the RRCA website at the link below:

http://www.rrca.org/coaching/

Please note that registration is limited to 30 participants and this class has always filled early, so do not delay if you would like to take the course.

We are grateful for the continued support of the NSPA and Philbin's Athletic Training Center in allowing us the use of their classroom for this event, in addition to their ongoing support of the Stride Clinic, Smarter Running and the Experienced Marathoner's Program.

If you have any questions, please contact Mike Broderick, NSCA-CPT & NSPA-CPT, RRCA Certified Running Coach

ASEP/RRCA Coaching Instructor, 301-921-1086

From Terri Hennessy, Penguin Group, USA (Inc.)

Last year Dean Karnazes released a book called Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-night Runner, which became an international bestseller. The book is coming out in paperback in March and Dean is going to be speaking and signing books at Olsson’s (2111 Wilson Blvd., Arlington) on March 7th at 7pm.
