2.         10K TRAINING PROGRAM BEGINS THIS SATURDAY, FEBRUAY 18th

Once again, the DC Road Runners Club is partnering with the Arlington YMCA for a 10K training program.

The program will begin Saturday, February 18th and last twelve weeks, with the goal race being the Arlington YMCA Mother’s Day 10K, a race which DCRRC co-sponsors with the YMCA. (Program participants may choose to run other 10Ks, of course, but the program fee includes a free entry in the Mother’s Day 10K on Sunday, May 14, 2006.)

The cost for the 10K Training Program is $40 for DCRRC members (non-members pay $52, as their fee includes a DCRRC membership). Runners will meet at the Arlington YMCA on Saturday, February 18th at 8 a.m. for orientation.

Groups will be formed based on runners’ experience, abilities and goals. All levels of ability will be accommodated. Participants should come to the first meeting prepared to go for a short run. Runners will have access to the locker room facilities each week, including showers, towels and sauna. Bagels and Gatorade will be provided each week, as well as high quality coaching advice.

5.         SNOWBALL SERIES

The Snowball Series is a series of eight races, each of which counts toward series points. Points are awarded in 5-year age groups, beginning with 14 and under, and ending with 80 and over.

The rules are as follows:

1) Your age on the day of the first series race you run is your age for the entire series.

2) Points are awarded to the top twenty places in each age group. The first place runner in an age group receives 20 points, second place earns 19 points, etc.

3) You must be a DCRRC member on the day of the race to earn points for that race. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by the victories in head-to-head competition. If there is still a tie, the time difference in those same head-to-head races will determine the winner.

4) One must run three races to qualify for an award. A runner's top five races will count in the total scoring for the series.

An awards ceremony is held in the spring and the top three finishers in each age group are presented an award.

There are THREE races left in the 05-06 Snowball Series:

Saturday, February 25th at 9 a.m. Belle Haven 25K, Belle Haven Park, Alexandria
Sunday, March 12th at
10 a.m. Burke Lake 12K, Burke Lake Park, Burke
Sunday, March 19th at

6.         HILL WORKOUTS

Please mark your calendar with the following hill workouts (each beginning at 9 a.m.):  March 26 and April 30. The February 26th workout is now the Howard County Columbia 10 Mile Challenge (a hilly run!)  If you have questions or wish to host a future hill workout, please contact Robin at rmartz@umich.edu

7.         SATURDAY LONG RUNS

The Club holds weekly runs from Iwo Jima on Saturday mornings, beginning at 8 a.m.  This week’s route is the Upton Hill Route, a 12 mile route, with 5-6 mile alternate route.  For more information and to see Saturday Long Run reports, go to http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun.  Please send questions concerning the Saturday Long Runs to David Kapson at slrguy@dcroadrunners.org.  Please plan to join us at Whitlow’s on Wilson for breakfast after the run!

** Have you noticed the “alternate route” we’ve added each week?  This is a shorter run of approximately 5-7 miles for those not wishing to do a run as long as our traditional “long run.”  The alternate run is catching on quickly, so if you show up, you’ll have others to run with—going your distance and your pace.  See you on Saturday!

** And did you see that we are famous?  See: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/09/AR2006020900671.html  (This was last Friday’s Weekend section of the Washington Post… On the Move… spotlighting our Saturday Long Runs.  All the more reason to show up!)

8.         WEDNESDAY NIGHT TRACK WORKOUTS

Here's the inside track on setting PRs: Whether you are attempting your first half-marathon, hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon, or pursuing an Olympic Trials QT for 10,000 meters, our speed sessions will help you meet your running goals. To feel the burn--and have fun doing it--join us for our Wednesday night track workouts, starting at 7:15 p.m.  Personal training advice is available from the USA Track & Field-certified coach, as well as from the many other "regulars" who have experienced the highs and lows of training, injuries, and competition.  Novice runners are always given a workout suitable to their level of fitness. This is the best place in town to meet other committed runners dedicated to improving their level of performance.

Our weekly track workouts are held at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington

Directions: From Washington DC, take I-66 east to the Glebe Road exit, turn right on Glebe, right on 15th Street for about 0.4 miles, to Stafford Street, turn right and cross over I-66 and the school is on your left. >From Vienna and points west in Virginia, take I-66 east to the Fairfax Drive exit, follow Fairfax Drive for about 0.8 mile to Stafford Street, turn left for about 0.3 miles and the school is on your right.
