DC Road Runners Club
Board of Directors meeting minutes
Dec. 16, 2002
Holiday Party at Amadie’s house

Attendees
Board members: Susan Maher, Pat Brown, Matt Pyle, Sarah Clements, Ian Clements, Andy Buechele, Amadie Hart
Also attending
Bob Platt, Howell Posner, James Scarborough
Maher called the meeting to order at 7:20 p.m.

Minutes from the previous meeting: approved.

Platt said he had hoped the board would hold off on paying dues to Road Runners Club of America because of RRCA’s financial problems. The DCRRC could pay directly to its insurer instead of going through the RRCA. He said that some clubs have broken off from RRCA and formed their own organization.
Maher said that the board is aware of this action and is disappointed by it, and that the board wishes to continue to support RRCA. Maher noted that DCRRC’s dues to RRCA already have been paid.
Hart said that splitting off from RRCA hurts RRCA’s ability to fix its problems.

Committees/Reports
Treasurer: Pyle distributed a spreadsheet showing the club’s income and expenses, which are about equal.
Turnover in YMCA program management has delayed the Y’s payment to DCRRC for one race and for the 2002 10K Training Program. Maher is working with the YMCA to resolve the issue.

Membership: Maher reported that membership Chair Jason Gross, who was not in attendance, is working on a membership directory. Membership numbers are up because of the change in methods of counting members.

Training programs:
10K Training Program – Maher said she will meet with the YMCA to arrange for the 2003 10K training program.
Wed. night track workout – Ian Clements reported that last week snow covered the track, so the workout was run on the Custis Trail. The last workout for the year is this week.
Saturday Long Run – Maher reported that Joe Racine will take over for John Coogan in leading the run.

Newsletter: Hart reported that the deadline for articles for the next newsletter is Dec. 20. She said she’d like articles on the 10K training program, the Snowball Series, the Bunion Derby results, the Columbia 10-Mile Challenge and race results.

Events: Maher said the club would have its annual banquet and annual meeting as separate events in 2003, rather than having them on the same day as it did in 2002. The board discussed possible speakers, and Maher asked for the board’s help in securing a speaker.

Past Races: Brown reported that the Reston runners won the Reston Challenge. Turnout was poor from the DCRRC. Ian Clements said there was not enough promotion and that SLR had its own race that same weekend.
Brown also reported that the Turkey Trot had 1,700 runners. The half-marathon had 195 runners. Both races went well, he said.
Platt reported that the Bread Run course was covered with snow, so the course had to be adjusted.

Future Races: Due to construction on the Greenbelt course, the club’s 10- and 20-miler race will move to the Al Lewis course in Kensington, MD and be run on Jan. 4, 2003, Maher said.
The board continued its discussion from the previous meeting about construction in Greenbelt and possible adjustments to the Greenbelt courses in the upcoming months.
Maher reported that the JFK 5K and 20K race will be run at Hains Point in January.

The meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.

The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 3, 2002.
