a spreadsheet showing the club’s income and expenses. He said that the
club’s certificate of deposit matured recently and he put $10,000 into
a new CD.
Membership: Maher reported that membership Chair Jason Gross, who was not in attendance, is improving the membership database.
Training programs:
Marathon Training Program - Sarah Clements reported that
the program wrapped up just before the Marine Corps Marathon. Coach Gary Guenther
handed out Gatorade to program participants at mile 22 of the MCM. Other program
participants opted to run marathons in Chicago, New York City and other places.
Wed. night track workout - Grant reported that the workout
was canceled once because Washington-Lee High School canceled outdoor activities
and locked gates to the track because of the sniper attacks. The club had
to cancel the workout another time recently because the lights were turned
off. Jay Wind is arranging with school officials to have the lights turned
on for track workouts this winter. Maher reported that the club won’t
be able to use the track on Wed., Nov. 6, because the school has an event
there. Grant said he’d make other arrangements for the workout.
Saturday Long Run - Ian Clements reported that attendance
has been down this fall, the result of runners competing in fall races. He
also said that John Coogan is recruiting runners for the Reston Challenge
race. Platt reported that the SLR time handicapped run is scheduled for Nov.
17.
Newsletter: Hart reported that the deadline for articles for the next newsletter is Nov. 15. A couple of articles are being written, and photos are available of the Marine Corps Marathon. She’d also like to have articles profiling runners in the club, an article about directing a race, an article about the Reston Challenge race and an article about the sniper attacks’ effect on running in the D.C. area.
Past Races: Brown said the Trick or Trot 5K, held on Oct. 27,
drew about 100 to 150 people.
Platt said that the Greenbelt 15K and 3K race was successful and had 167 finishers.
Future Races: Maher reported that the club is trying to figure out adjustment to the Greenbelt courses for races in the upcoming months due to construction. Bob Thurston is leading the effort.
Other Business
Race Schedule: The board approved the race schedule for 2003, with corrections
to the printout. Maher noted that an upcoming newsletter will describe the
Run For Your Life Series.
Race courses: Maher again asked that race directors write a description of
their race courses, which will be posted on the club’s website.
Virginia State meeting of the RRCA: Brown reported that he and Grant attended
this meeting since Maher was out of town. Platt noted that some attendees
discussed how to calculate club membership when figuring out the total club
dues payable to RRCA
Welcome Wagon: Posner said that as he’s been calling new members, many
have said they’re interested in joining training programs.
Equipment: Brown said that the club needs a table for cups of water at races
and a second clock. Maher said the club should buy those items.
The meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
