October 16, 2005
****NOTE TIME CHANGE FOR TODAY’S HILL ONLY--10:00 AM
Host: Gary Guenther
Hill description: The hill is on Tilden St. in NW Washington, D.C. and begins at the Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park; the section to be used for the workout is about 1/4 mile in length; the climb is steep at first but gradually gets easier.
Directions to hill: To get to Peirce Mill from the Capital Beltway, take Connecticut Avenue south for about 4.5 miles; turn left on Tilden Street and stay on it for a little over 0.5 miles; at the bottom of a steep hill, turn right into a parking area opposite the Art Barn on the left.
To get to Peirce Mill from the Roosevelt Bridge (Route 50) over the Potomac River, take the Rock Creek Parkway north about two miles and where the road seems to divide, bear right onto Beach Drive; stay on Beach Drive for 1.8 miles and turn left onto Tilden St., NW; then turn left into the parking area opposite the Art Barn on the right. Please note that Beach Drive is closed to traffic on weekends starting a short distance north of Peirce Mill.
Parking: Parking is available in a lot opposite the Art Barn (which is close to Peirce Mill) that is accessible from Tilden St. and on Tilden St. in the direction of Connecticut Ave.
From metro: The nearest Metro station is Cleveland Park, which is about 0.6 miles from Peirce Mill. To get from the station to the Mill, head north on Connecticut to Tilden St., NW; turn right on Tilden and follow it to the bottom of a steep hill; the Mill is on the left at the bottom of the hill.
Warmup loop: A short warm-up and warm-down run can be done on the Rock Creek bikepath, which passes by Peirce Mill; please be aware that though the path ends in at parking lot located a short distance north of the Mill, it is possible to run on Beach Drive heading north from that point on weekends, as the Drive is closed to traffic.
Places to eat afterwards: There are a number of fine restaurants and eateries located along Connecticut Avenue heading north and south from Tilden St. offering a wide variety of food and cuisines.
