What drew you to coaching? It is so much fun working with the trainees while promoting something that is a passion. The fellow coaches are great to work with, all the work they do is on a volunteer basis and they still show up rain, shine or snowmageddon. Plus running in DC during the winter just can’t be beat.
Favorite run? Every run is my favorite run, but from this program perspective the Airport loop is super fun (I sneak through the airport vs. Mt Vernon Trail), the hill run is such a great way to gauge your fitness late in the program but the Zoo run is probably the best. You get to run out Rock Creek and do the hill through the zoo – you can even stop at the petting zoo if you like.
Hometown? Putney, VT – Population 2,634 (2,600 hippies and 34 moose)
Interesting fact about you? One of the following is not true – biked across country, been to all 50 states, 30 countries, danced in the main Rio Carnival parade and have watched Titanic.
Running Pedigree – Coached 7 training programs, run 15 marathons, 10 halfs & a whole bunch of other races. I have been running consistently since doing track in high school a million years ago.
Why Coach? I love the social aspect of running. Training with others makes getting those miles in so much easier and more fun. I know I would have never completed all the races I have without great training programs and coaches, which is why I decided to be a volunteer coach myself! I hope that I can make your training experience a great and fun one!
Favorite run? Anything along the Potomac or on the National Mall. It really makes me appreciate DC, and reminds me not to take living here for granted.
Hometown? I am from Greensboro, NC. I have also lived in Myrtle Beach, SC and Jacksonville, FL.
Running Pedigree: I started running in 2005, after a co-worker convinced me to do a half marathon to raise money for breast cancer. Now I am hooked!
Why did you want to coach the Half Marathon training program? DCRR helped me get my start at running, and I couldn't have gotten through my first ten miler or half marathon without my coaches! I'm excited about getting to be a coach and supporting the group!
What's your favorite run? Running along Hains Point when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.
Where did you grow up? I'm still growing up..but I spent my childhood in San Antonio, TX
What's something most people don't know about you? If I could have any job inthe world it would be a National Geographic photographer or healthy chef. I'm working on both of those, but for now I am enjoying the world of nonprofit development. The great loves of my life are: traveling to out-of-the-way places (most out of the way, Timbuktu), karaoke (my karaoke mantra: Here I Go Again by White Snake), scrabble (most epic win: double word score on two sets of "qui" in the last play of the game), making ridiculously spicy food (I am from Texas) and 80's cover bands (like the Legwarmers!).
Why coach? In 2009 I signed up for my first race - the Army Ten Miller. I had no idea how to train properly. I found out about the DCRR ATM program and signed up. The first day of training I could barely run 2 miles. Fortunately I had some great coaches to help me reach my goal to finish the race. The coaches were helpful, knowledgeable, and most of all encouraging. I wanted to give back and that's why I decided to coach.
Favorite run? Any route that includes bridges.
Hometown? I grew up in Cochabamba, Bolivia and Falls Church.
Interesting fact about you: I swam with sharks and I don't mean little sharks. I love to travel and explore new things. My friends describe me as adventurous and this past summer I went skydiving with Coach Meredith and Coach Lauren

Why coach? After numerous 5ks and DC's Veteran's Day 10k in 2009, I joined DC Roadrunners in 2010 as a trainee for the Army 10 miler and 1/2 marathon program. I completed my first 1/2 marathon earlier this year and even managed to drop a dress size! I quickly caught the running bug and met some great runners that share my passion. I love to chat and joke during long runs and I am often told that my outlook, energy, and love for running inspires others to keep running!
Favorite run? Believe it or not, I really enjoy running the hills of the Martha Custis trail. It is a good challenge and I love the feeling at the end of the course running downhill!
Hometown? Born and raised on the south side of Chicago. I am an avid Bears, Bulls, and White Sox fan!Interesting fact about you: I speak Russian! I started learning the language when I was in 8th grade and minored in Russian in college. I've been to Russia for summer study abroad twice!
Why I Coach -I enjoy meeting new people and helping them work towards (and achieve!) their goals. Coaching helps me achieve my goals, as well! I was a half marathon trainee in 2007, and the DC Road Runners training program made all the difference. I've enjoyed coaching for the winter program ever since! It has also allowed me to make some great, new friends.
Favorite Run - The Mall and Capitol Hill on an early morning in the fall or spring. My favorite race is the New York City Half Marathon which I ran earlier this year.
Hometown - I am from Hibbing, Minnesota--home of Bob Dylan and Greyhound Buses... and really long winters.
Interesting Fact - My husband and I just got our first puppy, and her name is Bella. We think she is quite perfect and smart!
Why coach? I completed the Half Marathon training programin 2009 and the coaches really helped the trainees out. I am excited to have an opportunity to coach and help out other beginner runners enjoy the long runs
Favorite run? Anything with hills!
Hometown? Union NJ
Interesting fact about you? I was the beer pong champ in college. I was married on Oct 23, 2010, had an awesome honeymoon in Hawaii and have a brand new lovely daughter!
Welcome to the DCRR Spring Marathon Training Program's edition of "Meet the Coach". This is my first time being a part of the program as a coach. I began running in Fall 08. After having attempted to train for a 1/2 Marathon on my own (and getting injured during the race) I joined DCRR programs in Summer 09 to have a better training experience. Each year has been great! I love to do races around our area but do hope to branch out and do a few races in other states in the next year. My favorite race is the Parkway Classic that is held in April. My favorite place to run is in DC (running along the Cherry Blossom route).
I have been happily married for 10 years to my college sweetheart. We have two kids that are 5 and 3. I run to stay in shape so I can keep up with them and hopefully be an example to them. Other fun activities I enjoy are cooking, gardening, drinking good wine and good beer, and traveling to the Caribbean. I hope you enjoy your training experience!
Why coach? I was a trainee in the Army Ten Miler and National Half marathon training programs with the DC Roadrunners. I hope to contribute to a fun, memorable, and worthwhile experience which is what kept me coming back every Saturday.
Favorite run? I really enjoy early morning runs; mostly because that is when there are the fewest cars, bikes, and pedestrians to share the roads with.
Hometown? I grew up in Brattleboro VT and am an alum of Syracuse University and very proud of both of those facts.
Interesting fact about you? I once had a conversation with Senator Bernie Sanders on Church St in Burlington VT. At the time I was aspiring to land a job on the hill and trying my best to leave a good impression. The conversation had gone well, but the last thing I said was to wish the very Jewish Senator a Merry Christmas. Oddly enough I don’t have a job on the hill
Running Pedigree I just ran my second marathon - MCM - taking 15 minutes off of my PR... looking forward to #3

Why Coach - I've had a good experience training and coaching with DCRRC over the last few years, seeing people achieve something they've wanted to do and maybe thought was going to be hard. And, it's a lot easier to get out of bed early on a winter morning when you have running buddies and coffee (second breakfast?) afterwards to look forward to. Enjoy running 1/2 marathons and 10-milers, so am contemplating trying to run one in every state...6 states and DC down, many more to go.
Favorite run - any run involving a good conversation with friends and coffee or beer at the end : ). Although I don't think that's what you meant. In the area I have two favorites, Iwo Jima into the city, around Georgetown, Kennedy Center, Lincoln, up onto the Mall, around the Capitol (probably whining a little about the hill). Alternatively, an early morning loop around Jefferson when the cherry blossoms are in peak bloom - start early enough and usually you only have to contend with the wedding photographers and happy couples. Where I grew up, there is a loop getting some of my favorite views of the ocean and, because there are only 4 roads, invariably also getting cheered on or heckled by nearly everyone who passes.
Hometown - small rural New England with more trees than people.
Interesting Fact About You - I grew up with four brothers and can outrun them all...if given a long enough distance...10k should do it, maybe even 8k : ).
Why coach? I love helping people meet their running goals (and it gets me up and out when I would otherwise be sleeping).
Favorite run? Along the Potomac -- I never get sick of seeing the monuments. . . oh, and it's pretty flat.
Hometown? Foxboro, Ma -- Go Pats!
Interesting fact about you? In the 90s, I had a minor comic book character named after me
.
I
originally started running to get in better shape for soccer, and now do more running than playing. My first training program was the Winter/Spring 2011 DC Road Runners Half-Marathon program. It's a great community and very supportive of new runners, so it wasn't hard to train for that first race. This is my first time coaching, and I'm looking forward to helping out new runners.
My favorite route is along the Mall and Capital Hill. It's great on an early Saturday morning, any time of the year.
I've done two marathons, three half-marathons, one Ragnar Relay, and an assortment of 5Ks, 10Ks and 10 milers. I'm always looking for more races to do, and my goal for 2012 is to do several half-marathons around the US.
I had no i
ntention of becoming a runner. It's not that I was against running, I just couldn't imagine running 13.1 or 26.2 miles. I mean come on, that's crazy. Well turns out I must be crazy because for the past 8 years I've been running marathons and half marathons and loving every minute of it. In particular I love the training phase because you get all of this time in a group to talk and laugh and run (of course), which is typically followed up by breakfast, which just happens to be my favorite meal of the day. So needless to say, running and I were meant to be together.
In addition to allowing me to consume too many desserts and carbohydrates, running has also introduced me to some of my very best friends. Most of these friends happen to be fellow DC Road Runners, so needless to say, I think this is an awesome group.
If you were wondering, I've run 7 marathons and 3 half marathons. While I prefer the half marathon distance, I seem to have an addiction to tacking on the additional 13.1 and running the full. Event I don't understand this, so I will not try to explain.
So, besides running what else do I love? Well, cooking, eating, reading, laughing, hiking, and shopping for running gear are all at the top of my list. Oh, and I love Abraham Lincoln and visits to Mount Vernon.

I love running - I've been running for a really long time and I've run all sorts of distance. I don't think I've ever run anything shorter than a 5k, except for high school when our races were 2.5 miles for some odd reason. The farthest I've done is a 50 miler. I love ultras. It's a totally different ball game. The best part about running is the company. That's why I chose this photo to go with my profile. One of my friends drove me to Erie and back for my BQ attempt this Fall and even though she was injured she ran the last few 100 yards with me. It's amazing how many great friendships I have developed through running. So while running is competitive and a great way to stay in shape, I encourage everyone to enjoy it too. And train hard because there's nothing like reaping the rewards from hard training come race day. Happy running!
ecky has been a competitive runner for over 35 years, starting as a sprinter/middle distance runner and eventually graduating to the marathon distance. Sh typically race 5Ks through ½ marathons but enjoys an occasional track meet. She is a 3:08 marathoner and can be found placing as a master in just about every race she enters! She works as a financial analyst for a small consulting firm in Arlington, VA.Coach Joe is not a man of many words :)
I've been an active member of the club since the 2005 Marathon Training Program. I'm now a RRCA certified coach. Here are some of my race results - http://athlinks.com/racer/
