DC Road Runners Seminar Series: Strength Training and Nutrition for Runners, and Addressing and Preventing Injury: Muscle Imbalance and its Consequences
Written by Alexandra Steinberg Barrage

Due to the very positive feedback we received after our June stride clinic hosted by professional triathlete and coach Margie Shapiro, we have decided to provide MTP participants with even more opportunities for learning and interaction with local coaches and stellar athletes.
Please join MTP Co-coordinator Alexandra ("Alex") Barrage and other MTP coaches and members Sunday, July 19th, at 5:45 p.m. for two back-to-back one hour seminars on key topics relevant to your fall marathon training.  MTP participants are welcome and encouraged to attend one or both seminars, but please make sure you sign up -- seating is limited.

Nutrition and Strength Training for Runners

So you run an hour or two a day...what about the rest of the time?

Training for a marathon requires keen attention to strength and nutrition.  Your body must have the appropriate amount of muscle tissue, and you must be supported by plenty of nutrients to perform at peak capacity.

Monica's seminar will outline important concepts regarding strength and nutrition for runners, including:
  • Injury prevention through strength and flexibility
  • Targeting core muscles for optimal running form
  • Strength for muscle groups you may not think of first (those neglected during runs)
  • Proper pre- and post-workout nutrients
  • General daily nutrition requirements (yes, we can calculate your energy expenditure!)
Master Trainer and Swim Instructor Monica Pampell was a Division I collegiate swimmer during her undergraduate career at George Washington University.  As team captain, she led all team running workouts for cross-training.  She developed her true passion for running following college, and her recent successes include finishing a half-marathon in 1:27.42.  Monica is employed with the Sports Club/LA in Washington, DC, working with clients to improve general fitness, triathlon training, swimming, and rehabilitation.  She is also pursuing a M.S. Exercise, Nutrition, and Eating Behavior at the George Washington University.

Presenter Orlando James, a certified Athletic Trainer and Personal Trainer, has extensive experience in post-injury rehabilitation, personalized strength training programs, and improving athletic performance. His resume is packed with various high-level certifications, and he will teach seminar participants how to take a more balanced approach to health and performance. The seminar will be interactive and is a great chance to pinpoint potential problems before they hatch into full-blown injuries.
