Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Feb 20 SLR

Hello everyone!

It's still dicey out there, but you traiditionalists will be happy-- we're going to gather back at Iwo Jima at 8am tomorrow!  (May as well, as almost a dozen people were there last week anyway!)

Thanks to everyone who sent me a field report.  I can't cover much ground by myself, so I really appreciate all the help.  It sounds like there are some uncleared spots on the sidewalks still, but they are ultimately passable.  There is a great likelihood of melting/refreezing, so in addition to all of the regular running hazards we all must look out for as responsible individuals, be forewarned of extra ice in spots.  Neighborhood parking may still be difficult as well, but there has been some melting so it's a bit better than it has been, and there are those few coveted spots right by the memorial.

Unfortunately, but probably not unexpectedly, we're going to put off the scheduled sequence of runs for a while.  This week we'll revise a Christmas Tree run.  The trails just aren't ready for the likes of us yet, from the sounds of things.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing the group tomorrow!

Staying on Our Toes - Feb 13 SLR UPDATE

Hello Saturday Runners!

After scouting the area and conferring, a decision has been made that our usual meeting place is just not going to be conducive to a large organized group run tomorrow.  The streets aren't plowed curb-to-curb (or anything resembling curb-to-curb) so neighborhood parking is all but impossible, and much of the snow that *has* ben plowed from the streets now covers the running paths and sidewalks.

INSTEAD-- a group will be meeting on the Mall at the Castle at 8am.  This is metro accessible (Smithsonian) and reportedly clear of enough snow for a group to gather and run.  I am not certain as to whether I can get there personally, but I believe some of the National Marathon training group will be meeting there and we have been invited to start off with them.  I apologize for the late notice.  Hopefully we will back to normal relatively soon, but in the meantime, I hope you'll enjoy a change of scenery!

Stay safe, warm, and upright, and enjoy the "special" run tomorrow!!
