Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

To receive weekly SLR updates via email, please log in and check your email subscriptions.

ROUTE

This week's route is a new and improved MCM Taper route.  It mimics the end of MCM without endangering you by putting you on 110, or boring you by putting you on Mt. Vernon Trail for quite as long a time as last year.  Thanks to Andrew Kent for preparing the lovely and easy-to-follow cue sheet!

LONGER AND EARLIER OPTION

Steve Easley will be leading a group of (mostly Philadelphia) later marathoners who still need many miles on the 23-ish mile Rock Creek/Cap Crescent route at 7am tomorrow.  As always, feel free to start with them, and make it your custom out-and-back for desired distance.  Otherwise, the rest of us are meeting at the brighter but not earlier 8am start time.

MCM Tent and Water Stop Volunteers

To support your fellow SLR regulars who are running MCM, including our Training Program participants, we will be providing and staffing a tent in the finish area, and a water stop along the route.  Watch the site for information on both of these.

DCRRC will be sharing tent space at Charity Village with “Tuesday’s Children” We will be In ROW CV2 on the Left opposite American Cancer Society (map here).

For the tent, I will be drawing up a volunteer schedule.  Club members who are running are invited to leave drop bags and food at the tent, so we would like to have volunteers in the tent to welcome runners and watch their stuff while they cruise through the MCM course.  If you can sit for an hour or two (or all day if you are into that sort of thing), please email me at slr@dcroadrunners.org to let me know when you are available to help.  It can be fun to be a part of the festive atmosphere at the finish!  I hope to have 2-3 people at all times so volunteers can take potty breaks if needed, talk with one another in the tent, and have fun!

SINGLETS FOR TRAINING PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS

Unfortunately, we are still waiting for our vendor to get us the Men's Large and Women's Medium singlets.  If you need a size other than these, I will be at the beginning of SLR with the supplies we do have.  We hope to have the others sometime this week and will make arrangements for those who need their singlet by Sunday but were not able to obtain it becuase we were out of the size you needed.  Otherwise, please pick up your singlet tomorrow or send someone to get yours for you!

See you tomorrow!

8AM This Saturday! Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners,

As you may have heard, our start time this weekend will move to 8AM.  The weather has been mild and we've completed our scheduled 20 milers, so hopefully this will help anyone who would prefer to metro to our start, or who needs some stealth miles but would prefer to do them with a little natural sunlight!

Our route is Ross Drive and Brian Danza will be providing the midroute beverages.  Janet Braunstein is covering our post-run beverages for October.  Please thank them, and please let me know if *you* can help in the future.

There will be singlet distribution before SLR this week for Marathon Training Program participants.

Hope to see you all on Saturday!

Kristin
