Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR July 30 - Glover Mass Cap Crescent

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week will probably be another hot one, so start sipping water now if you haven't been.  Thankfully, our route will provide some shade (and some hills), so it will likely feel much like it did last week.

The route is Glover Mass Cap Crescent, and I hope to see you tomorrow!

SLR July 22 - Battery Kemble

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run is loops of Battery Kemble.  It's a fairly well-shaded route, but it's also going to be very, very HOT on Saturday.

As always, but especially this week, you should be hydrating all week long.  Start sipping NOW if you haven't been.  Also as always, but especially in extreme heat, make sure to have an exit strategy for all of your runs-- cab fare, In Case of Emergency phone number (or better yet, a phone with the ICE number programmed in it!) on your person, and ID are always good to have along just in case.

We will have midway beverages and they will probably be at the BOTTOM of the hill at Chain Bridge and MacAruther this time.  Thank Kristen Jaremback for having them there for us-- and make sure she's OK sitting out there, too, please!  Also, there are fountains at our Capital Crescent turnaround, Fletcher's, and in the park at M street just as you cross Key Bridge, across from Georgetown Running Co. (hopefully they will all be functioning!)  Karol Murray is going to plant a cooler of ice for us near Fletcher's as well, but be aware that Fletcher's has high traffic from people in addition to us, so don't count too heavily on something that may not be there-- think of it as a *possible* treasure if you find it when you get there, and please thank Karol for bringing it either way!

There will also be a group starting early, at around 6am.  It may be a little cooler then, but it will still be hot.

Bottom line, be careful out there, do what is best for you, and if you need to pack it in early, there is always Sunday or next week to try again. Nobody knows our own limits any better than we ourselves do as individuals, and we pretty much never cancel this run for the whole group, so decide whether and how far you want to go given whatever the weather will be.  Listen to your body and look out for your running buddies!

I will not be there this Saturday but Rick DeSaussure will be there to hand out cue sheets and get things started.  Have a great weekend everyone!
