Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR Oct 22 - Out/Back Capital Crescent

Hello Runners!

This week's Saturday Long Run will be an out-and-back on Capital Crescent. The planned distance is 10 miles which means the turn around point will be the water fountain at the 6.5 Mile Marker. Abigail Potter will be providing our midpoint beverages for the second week in a row so please be sure to thank her. She will be at Fletcher's Boat House. This week is our last scheduled week with midpoint beverages but we do have runners who will be doing November marathons. If anyone is interested in doing a midpoint stop for any upcoming week, please let me know as I'm sure that our November marathoners would appreciate it.

Please thank Katie Madison for supplying this week's post-run drinks. We need volunteers to provide post-run drinks for next week and then November as well. If we don't have volunteers then we may not have any drinks for the end of our runs. If you're not able to volunteer for an entire month, that's alright. We can work to cover any weekend that you may be away.

See you on Saturday and happy running!

SLR Oct 15 8:00am - Ross Drive

Hello Everyone!

We're changing the start time of SLR (Sleep Later and Rest) this week! From now until sometime next June we will be starting at 8:00am. Enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

This week's route is the always popular Ross Drive, which is about 14 miles in distance. We'll be running up through Rock Creek, onto Beach Drive and then Ross Drive for some rolling hills and nice scenery. Some of the route involves trails which may be muddy with the recent rain. Chris Deysher and Abigail Potter will be providing our midpoint beverages and will be at Peirce Mill. Be sure to thank them for getting out there to help us out!

Also please thank John for providing our finishing drinks! We still need volunteers to handle the beverages for the last two weeks in October as well as all of November and future months. If you are able to cover some of this time, please let me know as soon as possible. Without any volunteers, we may not have drinks for the end of our runs.

Good luck to our Baltimore runners this weekend!

See you on Saturday (at 8:00am!) and happy running!

-Chris
