Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Dec 24 - Holiday "Festivus" Run

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Dec. the 24th, we will be running our Holiday “Festivus Run” route.  The loop is 10.8 miles (so good for a low mileage week), but feel free to run it twice for almost 22 miles if you need a long run. There are also plenty of chances to turn around along the National Mall for a middle distance run.  Keep an eye out for the National Christmas Tree and National Menorah.

Please thank Miguel Cuya for our post-run Beverages.  We are covered for drinks through January, but could always use volunteers for February and beyond.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Directions:  Okay, there are a lot of little turns and streets so rather than write like a whole page here please check out the cue sheet and map for specifics.  Heated bathrooms under Lincoln Memorial and in the little house behind Washington Monument.

Have a great run! Looks like more great running weather ahead; although not as unseasonably warm as this last week its still above average with temps in the high 30s!  Hope everyone has a pleasant and safe Holiday filled with food, family, and friends – or at least eggnog, Sam Adams “Old Fezziwig” Ale, and lots of miles on foot :)

SLR Dec 17 - Arlington Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December the 17th, we will be running the BIG Arlington Triangle route. The listed route mileage is about 17 miles, mileage options are provided after the directions. Feel free to check out the cue sheet and map, although the directions given below are slightly different (easier too, just go under I-395).  The route is pretty straightforward, so enjoy this “tour-de-force” of Arlington’s softer-side (minus the power stations).

As of now no one has volunteered to do drinks for the rest of December (or January), so as it stands we will not have post-run beverages tomorrow.  ‘Tis the season of giving right?  So help out your fellow runners and step up - there’s still time!  DCRRC reimburses your expenses. We typically try to have people do 1 month at a time. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Directions:  From Iwo Jima, follow bike path toward Memorial Bridge.  Follow Mt. Vernon trail south past National Airport.  Veer left onto Four Mile Run Trail, through underpasses, and run along north side of Four Mile Run.  Continue alongside river for a few miles.  Pass under I-395, then take a right on South Shirlington Road.  Less than a block away is the start of the W&OD trail (look for BIG brown sign).  Follow W&OD about 4 miles, take a right at Gazebo in Bon Air Park, after 100 yards, take left onto Custis Trail going under I-66.  Follow Custis Trail back to Rosslyn, right on Lynn Street, arrive at Iwo Jima.

Heated bathrooms can be found shortly after getting on W&OD across the street in Barcroft Park (around mile 8.5), and then also down steep hill on your left around mile 10ish in Glencarlyn Park, still on W&OD.

Approx. Mileage Options (make it an out and back):

  • 10: Turn around before turning onto 4 Mile Run for about 10 miles
  • 14: Turn around when the trail passes under I-395 for about 14 miles

Have a great run! Looks like temps in the high 30s and mostly sunny tomorrow morning.  I seem to recall having the sun in my eyes a lot on this run, so sunglasses or a cap might be a good idea.

SLR Dec 10 - Battery Kemble

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December the 10th, we will be running the Loops of Battery Kemble route. The listed route mileage is about 16 miles, modified for 14 in these directions (below); mileage options are provided after the directions. The directions are a bit long, so check out the full directions in the route link for clarification - You might want to check out the big map too. The route might sound tricky but really its not, and provides great views of the river, rich-person homes, and even a run through the woods complete with a babbling creek for some ambient noise!

Jessica Schwartz has been nice enough to take care of our post-run beverages. However, as of now, we do not have a beverage volunteer for the 2nd half of December (and beyond), so if no one steps up in the next week we won't have yummy post-run drinks. DCRRC reimburses your expenses so please consider volunteering. We typically try to have people do 1 month at a time. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

The 2011 Gar Williams Half Marathon (part of the DCRRC Snowball Series) will be Sunday. Its free to DCRRC members and $5 for non-members. If you aren't running they could always use volunteers too.

Directions (long): Begin at Iwo Jima, cross key bridge down to C&O Canal path but then go left and take a quick right down the steps to Water St. Right on Water St. to Capital Crescent Trail (paved trail). Continue (past Fletcher's Boat House) on Cap Crescent. Just past MM 6.5 U-Turn at water fountain, now after about 1/4 mile from U-turn, take left onto trail with chain link fence on left to Potomac Ave. Follow Potomac Ave., then left on Galena Place. Take right onto former railbed dirt trail (or take MacArthur Blvd if you miss it). Now begin loops of Battery Kemble Park: Go up Chain Bridge Rd (HILL), right onto gravel road, right onto trail at bottom of hill, stay on trail through woods and exit onto MacArthur Blvd. Take MacArthur back to base of Chain Bridge (1 loop complete) . Retrace your steps back to Cap. Crescent Trail, turn left on trail (don't go to U-turn spot). Continue back to Georgetown and across Key Bridge through Rosslyn to Iwo Jima.

There are bathrooms at Fletcher's boat house on the other side of the canal.

Approx. Mileage Options:

  • 10: Turn around at MM 6.5 at Water-fountain, making the U-turn but just coming back from there
  • 13: Don't do any loops of Battery Kemble, turn around once you get to base of Chain Bridge Rd.
  • 15.5: Follow route directions but do 2 loops of Battery Kemble (each loop is ~ 1.25 miles)

Have a great run! Looks like temps in the high 30s and mostly sunny tomorrow morning.
