Monday Night Runs

Please note: Monday Night FootMall is held every week, other than on Federal holidays or otherwise noted.

This free weekly run is a great way to get in some additional mileage to add to your total for the week. This out-and-back run is an especially attractive option for dark winter evenings, as it is a well-lit and transited route, much of the surface is soft gravel, and it is mostly flat with two good training hills. All paces are welcome. Most weeks the run is led by Coaches Sasha and Jay.

We begin by meeting and stretching in the lobby of Potomac Plaza Apartments, a block and a half away from the Foggy Bottom metro, at about 7 pm. At 7:15 p.m., we head out down Virginia Avenue toward the Lincoln Memorial, loop up and around the Capitol Building, and then head back to Potomac Plaza Apartments for a total distance of 6.5 miles. Those who want a shorter run may instead loop around the Washington Monument, for a total of 3 miles, or take advantage of several other turnaround points along the Mall for a different total mileage.

Upon return to Potomac Plaza at around 8:30, sometimes we proceed on foot to 51st State Tavern, on Pennsylvania and 25th Street, for 50-cent tacos and $2.75 Buds or whatever your choice of beverage, or to Chadwick's on the waterfront in Georgetown, for half-price burgers and beer. You may leave dry clothes at Potomac Plaza to change into after the run.

Monday night FootMall update -- Dec. 14, 2009

Monday night FootMall is on tonight. Due to a meeting in the Potomac Plaza Apartments conference room, please congregate on the left side of the lobby -- the side closest to Virginia Avenue.

See you then!

Coach Jay

Monday night FootMall -- 12-07-09 update

The Monday night FootMall is on for tonight, December 7. Coach Sasha and I are still in California, after having run the California International Marathon yesterday, but a substitute coach will be at Potomac Plaza this evening and will run up to the Smithsonian Castle and back, for a total of four miles. Anyone is free to run the full 6.5 miles around the Capitol and back as well, though there may not be a coach for that distance. Please chat with each other during the warm-up stretches and try to form a group of people who are running the full 6.5, and stick together so that no one is left alone in the dark.

Sasha and I will be back next week (and, of course, this Saturday for our marathon training run out of Fleet Feet). See you all then!

Coach Jay

Monday Night FootMall -- Nov. 30, 2009 update

As it stands right now, the Monday Night FootMall is on for tonight, as long as it's not pouring rain at 7:15. I'm under the weather and won't be running, but I'll come down to the lobby to greet everyone.

Last week's FootMall was a great success. About nine runners participated in the 6.5 miles up Capitol Hill and back. Then we went to Chadwick's in Georgetown for some half-priced burgers.

Hope to see you tonight,

Coach Jay

Monday night FootMall -- 11-23-09

The first Monday night FootMall of the 2010 National Full and Half Marathon training season was a great success. In addition to Coaches Sasha and Jay, nine runners met in the lobby of Potomac Plaza at 7 pm for a meet-and-greet, stretching, and some running tips. The weather was beautiful, and we headed out at about 7:20. Sasha and I turned around with a few other runners at the Smithsonian Castle -- the 2 mile point -- and headed back for a total of 4 miles. Trainee Derek, who has run the FootMall route with us a number of times, valiantly led the rest of the group up Capitol Hill and back to home base for a total of 6.5 miles. After the run, several of us walked to 51st State Tavern, where we enjoyed several 50-cent tacos and $3 Buds. All in all, it was a very nice way to start the week.
We look forward to seeing everyone again this coming Monday!
Coach Jay
